Just got a '96 Talon. Rough idle.

Just got a '96 Eagle Talon for a graduation present. It's a non-turbo, automatic ( :thumbdown ). Only problem I've noticed is that it has a rough idle, and engine gets wayyyy hot(the prop rod burned my hand when I put the hood up.) I plan on checking the timing to see if that's the problem for the rough idle, but what else should I look for to help the idle problem and the hot engine?

As far as the hot engine, I am not sure. But for idle, do the basics first. Make sure its had an oil change, try some new plugs/plug wires, also, try unhooking the battery, this re-sets all the sensors, some people have had that fix idle issues. But ya, idle is a common problem with our DSMs, try the basics, if that doesnt work....maybe its time to get a full tune up.
