Just got a 92 GSX

Just yesterday, I bought this car and drove it back to my house (3 hour drive). I am planning on replacing the timing belt and hoses from what you guys told me in my thread asking if I should buy the car. Is the timing belt something I can do myself? I am not a mechanic but I have decent mechanical skills. Also same thing for hoses and such, is that a do-it-yourself sort of thing? One more thing, the rear hatch does not stay open after I pull it up so I have to hold it up, is there an easy fix for that, and can I replace the hatch insulation by myself since part of it is ripped where it meets the body of the car.

ahh the infamous broken rear hatch struts. I think 90% of 1g's have a rear lid that won't stay open on its own. You can get new hatch struts if you really want, machv has em. The timing belt is something you can do, but I'd get someone who knows what they are doing to help you your first time because if not done correctly, it can cost you your pistons and valves. Hoses, well if they look bad just change em, hoses are simple, just take off the bad one and throw in a new one. Good luck man!!

Where can I find an aftermarket timing belt that will be stronger than the stock one? Also is there somewhere I can find a complete hose kit that has most of the hoses the car needs, or will I have to buy them in groups, like radiator hoses here, and another type of hose there, and when I buy hoses I should go with tougher silicone ones right?

pretty much every dsm vendor sells a timing belt kit. Just pick one and you're set. As for the hoses, I don't know anyone who sells a complete replacement kit.

Congrats! & it MADE the 3 hour trip home - that's actually kinda rare - Don't forget to check replace EVERY Fluid in the thing also - Good Luck, you are off to a good start.
