just checked out a car, questions!!

Ok guys, I just went and checked out a 94 GSX, I really want get myself an extremely clean 1g thats AWD. This one wasnt bad, however there were a couple things that got to me. First off, it IS modded with the following
boost controller
2 1/2 back exhaust with high flow cat
aftermarket down pipe,
ported o2 housing,
ported 2g exhaust manifold,
Supra fuel pump,
boost guage.

The timing belt was changed at 100k he says. Its at 104k now. First thing I noticed was it has no cam gear cover, no idea why he took that off, , but the belt seemed to hum very prominently. Is this just because of the lack of the cover? My laser doesnt seem to hum like that, but I have the cover on.
Does this sound normal? It started up and idled beautifully. Second thing, I have never driven an AWD but the clutch felt weird, it would depress efforetlessylike 3/4 of the way, then get a lot stiffer for the last bit. Then when taking off any little movement of the pedal at all would engage the clutch, if felt strong, just my FWD laser has a way later engagement point feels pretty much the same through its whole range of motion. Then the last thing is, he said that he had the boost controller turned all the way down. I dont know why he would do that. I took it for a drive and it felt good, but I was certain that my laser (all stock but running 14psi) would destroy it. I asked how much it was boosting, he said 7 psi (which i didnt think was possible to go that low with the stock wastegate) im thinkin he might have been referring to .7 bar, because his freakin boost gauge was a bar boost gauge instead of psi (when I mentioned that to him he had no idea what I was taling about) but isnt .7 around 10 psi? I dont know why he would have it down to only 10, I was expecting the car to be fast. Especially with the supporting mods so anyway, I'm thinking of asking him to put the boost back up and let me drive it again later.

But what do you guys think about the other issues?? and sorry this is so long!!!!

New clutches have very low engagement points in our cars until they are broken in, also possibly a loose clutch cable, simple to check either way. Although a cam gear cover may not be a "necessary" part per say, murphy's law dictates that you don't take chances with random flying debris. Sounds like a nice ride, good luck.

so you think the clutch may have been ok? as far as the cam gear cover being off, i agree its a bad iea, but does the belt typically sound much louder with it off?

If he has mods that are installed and knows nothing about them I honestly wouldn't trust that he "did the timing belt". Look at the belt itself, does it look new?

The stock wastegate shouldn't let it boost all the way down to 7psi. If he has a boost controller and it's turned down LOWER than the stock wastegate allows then the wastegate will take over and set it to stock boost levels. PSI to BAR / BAR to PSI .7 bar = 10.2 psi actually.

Something is not right with that car if it felt "slow" personally. It should have scooted very well. laugh: at scooted) I say pull the intake off and check for shaftplay in the turbo and then go ahead and do a compression check. But like I said. I dunno if I would trust someone that has modded a car that knows nothing about the mods.

How much is he asking?

I've driven with the cam gear cover off for over a year now, and i wont suggest it. it shouldnt make a difference in noise much, i suppose the cover would muffle it a bit, but not a very noticable amount. Get one ASAP cause my wires kind of went for a travel into the timing belt and cut through one of the wires *sigh*

I say find out about regular maitenace, not only the timing belt. wires? plugs? coil pack, vaccum leak tests, etc etc etc.
see how maintained it really was, then you'll feel better. especially when he lowers the price cause he knows he should

The belt did look new, and he wasnt claiming that he did it himself. He said he only owned the car for 4k miles and the previous owner had the belt done at 100k. Yeah I definitely was unimpressed with its performance at (I'm assuming) 10 psi. It didn't feel SLOW per say, but my car felt a good bit faster. The car was modded much heavier than mine. All I have done to mine is the BCS mod and hacked aircan. I came home and took mine out for a spin and thought "now this is more like it" it's just weird. The car seemed very nice, looked good, interior was gorgeous and it ran/idled very smooth. But at the same time there were these couple things that just bugged me. He was asking 4k, my plan was to see if i could get it for 3500. But I dont think that it "wowed" me enough to want it for 3500 now. I need to make friends with some dsm guys locally, it'd be nice to have someone a little more experienced go and check it out.

It should still feel pretty quick even if your only at 10psi....when I didn't have my vaccum lines hooked up right I was boosting at 8psi, then fixed them and i'm boosting at 11psi, but it still felt pretty quick at 8...and feels even faster at 11

Dosen't Impress The Buyer.
Has a "few" things you question.
IS modified but actually slower modded than it should be stock.

I'd backout and go look for a good running car thats close to stock.

well, that's pretty much a good summarization (is that a word?) beleive me, i've been checkin up on those sites you linked me to (along with millions of others) and i can never find any AWD 2g's, let alone clean ones... so i guess i really just wanted this to be "the one" but you're right, i wasnt as impressed as i wanted to be. it's a bummer to have to go back to the drawing board, but hey, i'm in no rush.
