Okay, motor is gone for sure. I am not sure why, I think it may have overheated. The temp gauge was in the red, but it could not have been there long.

Anyways, I just need to try and determine if it is in the head or the bottom end. If it is the head, I have a spare. If it is the bottom end, I am screwed. There is a rather loud tapping/knocking noise coming from the motor. It gets louder with rpms. It is more a high pitched sound. To me it sounds like it is coming from around the timing belt, but I have no idea. The car isn't smoking and is holding good oil pressure. I am going to go drain the oil now. Any input is appreciated. Thanks

check the oil for coolant too, you could have just lifted/warped the head and maybe you are mixing coolant/oil now. I dont know about the tapping though... that doesnt sound too good. Does it sound like a lifter tick, or much worse?

what happened to cause the temp to rise? Were you getting knock? Racing/tuning/doing a pull or just driving around normally? What were the conditions when the motor "went"?

Good luck

:( Ok sorry about the bad news but it sounds like you may have spun a rod bearing, check the oil like arash15 said for metel shavings and dont run the motor too much you dont want it too lockup

Sounds like valve tapping. Do you ahve any missing or rough idle symptoms? Double check your cam timing. Yes, do a compression check and report back here. I hope it's not the 'death knock'.

Thanks guys for all the relpies.

I was just on some country roads doing some "spirited" driving. I don't know about knock, I don't have a logger. I just installed an evo III and I am on stock boost. I don't know why the car got hot. It couldn't have got hot for too long as I try to frequently monitor the gauges. The noise is way louder than lifter tick.

Anyways, I drained the oil and it looked a little shiny and thin. I could just be paranoid though. I didn't see any metal flakes. Once it sat, it didn't seperate, so I don't think it is mixed with coolant.

The car has been idling funny for a few days. It has been dying when you brake hard. It also has been idling lower when the clutch is depressed. Like when you held the clutch in it would idle below 500rpms and kind of sputter. Sometimes it will shoot up to 1,500 rpms. Now it idles real low and kind of sputters. Once it gets going it will idle close to normal but jumps up and down. I didn't run it too much so I didn't damage anything else.

Don't have a compression tester, so I will be borrowing one on Monday. Until then anymore thoughts are appreciated.

i've blown two head gaskets and not had coolant mix w/ oil (blwe directly between cylinders). It CAN happen. I treally sound like a blown head gasket. Or either your timing has jumped. How old is your timing belt? the tapping noise really smacks of a timing mishap.

Timing belt has 80k on it. As far as I know it is still the original. I was going to build the head within the next year and was going to replace everything then.

I'm inclined to agree with dsm-onster and say blown head gasket. Sounds like it's acting like mine did after blowing the head gasket but the loud ticking is beyond me. Never happened to me anyway, not to say that it isn't something that can happen after blowing a head gasket.

I filtered through the oil better and there is pieces of metal. Also had a friend of mine who is more knowledgable than me come listen to the noise, and he said it is a rod knocking. So it is pretty much a definate that I spun a bearing. So I'm pretty sure a 2.3 liter 6 bolt is in my future. Thank god for school loans. Thanks for all the opinions, and fast replies.
