Ok first off. The past week, every time i started my talon. All is good.... when i go and turn the AC on, i heard a growling sound from the engine for a few seconds and then it would go away and the AC would function great.... I assumed the bearings in the AC compressor were going bad. I was going to service the unit ASAP... well i left work two days ago and i tested out the AC by turning it on, heard the grown again, i turned it off. then as i started driving, i heard some horrible belt squealing. I figured the AC locked up and was burning the belt up. i pulled over after a few miles and popped the hood. Sure enough the AC belt wasnt turning, the belt was torn up and about broke. The rest of the belts were turning fine and the crank pulley was burning hte belt up. I figured ok i am going to let the belt break and keep on going until i can fix it at home. I drove on and after about 20 feet the belt snapped and all was quiet. Well a few miles down the road the engine dies suddenly (like the key shut off) and then i heard some tinging from inside the motor.

Well the broken AC belt managed to get behind the plastic timing cover and the timing belt jumped and i bent all the intake valves.

I tore the engine down today and found that the Harmonic damper was bad, the pulley section just falls off the hub where it bolts to the crank gear. Luckily it didnt wear too far back into the timing cover. it started too but it didnt damage the timing belt.

I am like HMM. I then go over and turn the AC, the AC compressor seems to be turning fine. I manually hooked up a battery to the compressor, and with power to it, it turns on and then when i turn the pulley it has resistance to it like expected... so at this point i am thinking the compressor is good. it did squeak a bit, but i sprayed some WD40 on it and it stoped the squeaking.

Strang thing is, while the belt was burning up and before it broke, the rest of the belts were turning... so i KNOW the crank pulley was turning, so i dont know why it decided to burn the AC belt up.... Something had to be locked up to keep the belt from spinning.

Could the bad damper have caused this and the AC compressor be fine???

Still sucks as i still have to fix the head LOL.

Thanks for the help!

I call it the compressor locked up on you for the time being - prob low on R-12 which will seize up a compressor in nothing flat when it wants to.

The growling noise was the pistons inside the compressor starting to run dry to where they eventually seized due to heat expansion. When they cooled down and contracted, is why you can turn it by hand.

It seized and took out the HB with it.

Also, being almost a 20 yr old compressor, they do wear out with age.

Sorry, it's a bummer with us older vehicles but things DO wear out.
