Vancouver,
Hello DSM crowd, I am about to buy a 90 TSI with bad motor (not sure about the state of the motor only that it's smokes like a mofo).

Anyways I read up on some literature around here, regarding a JDM engine swap, since motor has to be changed and I have access to a Japanese engine locally for $1300 CAD I think that's the best fastest/cheapest way to get this car on the road.

This is what I know so far, I am looking for a 6 bolt motor from 1G Eclipse (or whatever car it came from, but it has to be 6 bolt). Bigger 16G is a plus as well as 550cc injectors, engine should be a straight bolt in except the wiring harness has to be swaped with USDM one.

I am missing anything? Mainly regarding the engine swap Ie do I need JDM ECU or any other modifications to make the engine run, any odd balls on the JDM motor that have to be corrected?

All help appreciated, I do feel like a nut case cause I know so little about DSMs, I had 9 Supras and couple of Rx-7 but no DSM

you dont necessary need a JDM engine, get whichever is cheaper.
to my knowledge the Block is the same, and the only difference is the intake manifold which people replace the USDM intake manifold anyway.

some JDM engines do come with 16G and 550s, but according to RRE (roadraceengineering.com) the chances of getting one of those is like 5%

most will come with TDO5 14B and 450s

I post on supraforums too :D

For the JDM Cyclone 4G63, swap the coolant/thermostat housing, and you may also have an issue with the A/C compressor. Most guys tend to just remove it and run without A/C. Other than that, it should be a straight bolt in deal.

But I agree that you could save yourself some money and just get a regular US 6-bolt.

BTW, nice MKIIIs, especially the black one. :thumb:

Welcome to the board.

thankx guys, I will look around for USDM engine, but to my knowledge it will cost the same as JDM in my area.

I'll keep in mind about the therm housing and intake

I'll keep you posted

I have a cyclone now...also dont forget to swap over the throttle bodies if you plan to keep your DSM emissions legal...Here in Alberta we dont so I kept the JDM T.B....I did get the one with teh 16G on it..BUT it only comes with 510's, not 550's like ppl think...But eh, whatcha gonna do...

If you have the JDM ecu it will make things runa lil smoother, but not a HUGE issue...if you have any questions please feel free to PM man...Good luck with the swap...

alright, I will post some pictures tomorrow if I buy the car

Mainly the guy is asking $900 CAD without the rebuild turbo (which is not installed) or $1200 CAD with the turbo, it's TSI 5spd not sure about AWD I didn't see any badges to indicate that, super nice shape no rust or dents paint is ok, inside looks owesome with only 187,000km that''s like 115,00 miles. He said the car smoked really bad, Turbo was seized, then turbo was rebuilt, so he installed it but it stilled smoked, anyways I'll be dealing with it tomorrow morning, so see how it goes:D

Yahoo, I got the Talon:D

'90 Turbo 5spd AWD, eaibach lowering springs and Brand new 16G turbo
I'll start putting it together next couple of days, so I'll see how it runs and if it needs an engine, eather way it was a really good deal so can't complain:thumb:

Got the engine together seem to run ok, I ave't driven it yet so

But got few questions:

1. It's sounds like a bag of marbles right by the #1 cylinder under the valve cover or around cam gears area, I have no idea what it is, my guess it's a hydrolic lifter but not sure, sounds goes away as soon as RMP increse

2. There is a wierd high pitched whining noize coming from clutch area, which goes away as sson as a slightly press on the clutch pedal, also it's not constant sometimes there sometimes not, I figure it's a trow-out bearing?

Does that's sounds right? is there are common things that can produce above noizes? thankx fellas

ART

PS: I am to drive it now, so we'll see if it breaks on the road:D

For the bag of marbles type sound...when the car is idling, check the crank pulley, I know when my started to separate (common problem) it soundsed really weird, and as the revs climbed the noise died down and stopped...

The pulley if starting to go, will wobble instead of running true...

Again, anymore questions, just PM me man...

I got a brand new 14G from what I can tell) Turbo, I haven't really boost too much, but the highest boost I've seen was almost 1.0kg (which is like 13 PSI) is that normal?

Also at idle it's right under -0.6.kg which is like 15PSI of vaccume, is that sounds right?

It's a Canadian Car, so boost meter is in Kg or something like that:D

14B not G man...and other than that are you using the stock guage set in the Tach, cause just like the Supras man really dont tell you much, its an estimation based on the air flow and revs, by your ECU...please invets in an Aftermarket one just to be sure, and then lets see what boost you are running, I have seen on a stock car anywhere from 9-14psi depending on if the BCS was removed and atmosphere condtions as well...

Let me know how things work out...

Good place to get some JDM motors if you haven't already.

NO!! THis is NOT a good place to get motors from, I ordered mine from there after a local shop recommended them, well when the motor came it had a snapped timing belt which resulted in a buncha bent valves, so i basically had to get the head rebuilt, and of course the importer denied they sent out a bad motor. :thumbdown
