I'm desperate here. I don't have a vice grip of any kind and this is the first stud I removed -have pulled the rest after cleaning the threads first- and if I can get this last nut off I'll be done. Can't figure this one out though. It's the last/second nut of two that I used to remove my head studs. Need suggestions please. Thanks

Going out and buying a vicegrip would be the easiest of options you could also try to double nut the other side of the stud and once the two nuts are locked together tight you should be able to break the nut loose.
 
But then that leaves me with THAT nut to also have to break loose. Hmm.. Maybe a pipe wrench...

The two nuts are just to hold the stud from turning, they'll come back off really easy.
 
Mine didn't. I had some rust on the end threads. I got it off after playing around with it more.
