Is this transfer case gone?

this needs to be replaced right? There's a bunch of cracks on the very top part that goes into the tranny. do you think there's much of a chance the dealership would replace the transfer case under the recall if I told em it was making a noise and wasn't working right? To replace the transfer case will any old t-case work or what? Will it hurt an awd 1991 talon to drive with that out and the drive shaft out?

No you can't drive with the driveshaft out, yes it will hurt your car, the photo won't load so i can't see the pic, but you'll need to check the # of splines on the input shaft of your transfer case to get a new one. Swapping it out is fairly easy and a used t-case can be got for $100 or so if you shop right. For swapping the t-case out just pull the front mounts for your exhaust and wedge it to the side. There'll be five 17mm bolts holding it on, one of which is tucked way the hell up high and tight up by the tranny. Drain it, pull it and slap the new one in. I'd give it 2 hours max, 45 min if you know what you're doing.
