for some reason my car has a supposedly swapped awd engine. its a january of 92 model with the six bolt stock engine but probably the engine blew up so they swapped with a supposedly awd engine. anyways my tranny is a stock 2wd tranny but my starter wont hit my flywheel unless i have an awd flywheel on a 2wd car???? sounds kinda weird. anyways. any remarks at all would be appreciated. thanks.

You have it backwards, you likely have an AWD flywheel which is smaller than the FWD flywheel, hence no contact between the starter and flywheel. Your options are A) swap out the AWD flywheel for a FWD one B) convert to AWD.

There is absolutely nothing diferent between the engines. The diference is the flywheels like dazzellerr stated.

no see when i had the awd flywheel in in the firstplace it did great then on a cold day it decided to grind and then not turn the car over at all and then thats when i found out it was an awd flywheel so we got the flywheel that was made for the engine which was a 2wd because that what my car was. and then the starter just whined because no contact but when we put the awd flywheel in there it would work. why?

ok just for sure. which flywheel has a bigger diameter: fwd or awd? because i need the one that is the biggest in diameter to mesh with my starter.

You had a 420a motor stock if they said they swapped in an awd 4g63t that meens you mite have an awd tranny in a 2wd car unless they put a 2wd tranny in there also, but there are no differences in the actual 4g63 motors no matter if it is fwd or awd.

The 420A motor came in the N/T 2g's not 1g's.

What transmission are you using? If it is the N/T transmission from your car, you need an N/T flywheel. If it is a turbo transmission, then you need the turbo FWD flywheel.

No. he didnt have a 420a motor in there. 1) he is a 1g. and 2) the swap from 420a to 4g is by no means an easy task or common practice.

listen to what others have said if you have a fwd trans then you need to have a fwd flywheel and starter plate. get / make sure you have those items and you should be good to go.

also i see that your car is a n/t platform, does it have a turbo trans or the n/t trans? because the non turbo trans will not work with the turbo flywheel/clutch.

Sounds like the place where you are getting your parts from does not know what they are doing. Your car is a N/T fwd and will need a N/T fwd fly wheel. If you have to take the old one that worked into the parts place and compare it to the new one to make sure it is the corect one. That would tell you for sure.

No there the same awd-fwd except awd has a transfercase and LSD rear end

Engine is the same, flywheel is different.

As stated, if you have a n/t tranny, you need the n/t flywheel. If you have a turbo fwd tranny, you need the turbo fwd flywheel. If you are using a turbo awd tranny, you need the awd flywheel. 3 tranny's, three different flywheels.
So, which tranny do you have?

And on the turbo, awd and fwd clutches are interchangeable. The n/t fwd has its own clutch which can only be used with the n/t flywheel.
