is there a way to check for codes if you CEL light is not on?

i dont have one here where im from and my car dies within ten mins of driving

Yes you can but I really doubt your going to get any codes out.
Follow the procedure in the VFAQ or http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/art...out-scantool-cel-testing-1g-turbo-models.html

You can make sure your CEL light works by watching the cluster when you turn the ignition on, all the lights are turned on for bulb test and the CEL will then go off after five seconds.

If the bulb works and it's not on currently then it's not likely you have any active codes. I forget if the ECU also flashes out the stored codes as well as the active.

Making/getting a datalogger is a good idea.

Since it seems you have DSMLink just read your codes using it.
