I am swapping my 99 Eclipse GST to a 6 bolt engine and I am trying to buy a new timing cover since mine didn't come with one, is there a difference between 1g engines and 2g engines timing cover?

thanks for the info, this is my first 2g eclipse and first 6 bolt swap, still learning about these cars. should i look for a 1g front cover then? a lot of listings just say they fit all 2g or 94-99 and they all look the same

So you are aware, front cover is normally a term for the oil pump on these cars. In that case, those are 6-bolt and 7-bolt specific so get the front case / oil pump for your block.

Lower timing covers are 6-bolt and 7-bolt specific, but it goes deeper than that. The 6-bolt cover is different than the 1G 7-bolt cover even though they are both one piece. The 2G cover is two pieces. And the 2Ga mid-cover is technically different from the 2Gb cover, but they are interchangeable.

yeah i had a hard time just finding the one peice cover so i ordered the two peice cover and hope for the best ;) looks like they can be made to fit with a little bit of trimming

You need the correct 6 bolt cover. It is not just a 1g. 1g 90-92 are 6 bolt. 1g 93 94 are 7 bolt with a one piece cover. 2g is 7 bolt with a 2 piece cover. They are all different.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/203869982713 that is what i bought, it dose say 94 on it witch is the same year as my motor i think. mine has the plastic cam angle sensor, but that is the only identification i have, is there any where on the block to find out the date?

If you have a 6-bolt block, it is not originally from a ‘94.

The eBay link is to a 2G lower cover which will not completely bolt up to the block. As stated, a 6-bolt cover is correct for a 6-bolt block and in a 2G, it will need to be modified to fit around the motor mount bracket.

I've gone and cancelled my order, how do I identify my engine? according to online its a 93-94 because it has the plastic cam sensor, but i dont know if that has bean swapped on later

Cam sensor means nothing. That can be added to any. Check for a vin stamp on the block. It's right below the water pipe by the dipstick. I am assuming you have this other motor on a stand? If you identify it as a 7 bolt look for the motor mount bosses on the front. 2g 7 bolt doesn't have them, 1g does.

VIN stamp is on the transmission side of the block, nearest the throttle body -- or under the 1G CAS. The stamp on the block near the dipstick includes engine code and serial number. But yeah, I believe you can use the serial number to determine whether it is a 6- or 7-bolt, so long as the engine code is 4G63. For reference: What block is this?

Feel free to share with us some pictures or the information from that spot on your block if you still aren't certain.

All that said -- if the engine is on a stand, count the number of bolts holding the flywheel / driveplate to the crankshaft and be done with it.
