So I recently bought a used 2G Mitsubishi Eclipse and the radio was taken out by the owner along with the factory amp which is located under the passenger seat. I bought all the stuff for a new stereo(aftermarket headunit, aftermarket amplifier, wiring kit etc) and when I hooked up just the headunit(not the amp) I got a really weird sound, the music was quiet and I didn't hear all aspects of the music(guitars were missing, no vocals). When I took it to an audio technician guy he said the reason for this was that there was no factory amplifier and that I would need to get one. So I'm asking do I really need to get it? Could I achieve a proper sound by just using the aftermarket amp I have? I read around the forum for some clues but couldn't find a straight answer. I'd like to know so that I don't waste time and money purchasing an amp I do not need.

The factory amp acts as a crossover to the front tweeters as well. So if you want them to work you either have to get a head unit with 6 outs or find another way to power them/split the signal. I currently run the rear speakers with my head unit and the fronts (door and tweeter) through the amp since i didn't realize that i need 6(+2 for subs) outputs....Back on track, i cant see a single way that any wiring issue could remove parts of a track. Seems odd. I would start with 2 speakers at a time and see if you can't find a way to power them. My head unit can run the speakers without amp power. I can't see why yours wouldn't. Possibly try jumpering the speaker so that you have two isolated wires running right to a speaker?
