The exhaust on the FWD doesn't have to clear the rear axle.

1g or 2g? If it's a 1g, then no it will not fit. The awd gas tank is smaller than the fwd and the exhaust runs along the awd drive shaft. It's very hard to find an aftermarket exhaust for a fwd 1g. Easiest just to go to an exhaust shop and have it custom made. If it's a 2g then I'm not sure.

On a 2g, no. 2g FWD has many bends. An AWD catback is almost straight.

that doesn't necessarily mean it won't fit. I have personally seen someone swap them over because they didn't like the unecessary bends in the FWD setup like myself and they changed it. I too am gonna change to the awd setup but you have to run an AWD downpipe and full exhaust. Also you have to move if i remember correctly one of the hangers. But You also have to chop the piping in some places and re-weld. The answer to your question is no it is not a direct fit but it can be modified to work.
