is the differential shimmed in the transmission?

I took apart my transmission and replaced the front differential with another one, so the bearings arent the same at the ones that were on the old differential. I took the car for a drive and boosted hard in the snow. 6000 rpms of snow slinging. I just want to know if its going to last. I can hear the bearings moving in the transmission, but everything appears to work well.

i noticed last night, that i forgot to put the top bolt in. I iwas beating the car without the bolt in. im hoping thats the problem. Fingers crossed. if its not im surprise it held up this long.

Im going to say yes that it does need to be shimmed. In vfaq it says there is a shim on the differential passenger side of the transmission. I did see it in there. i couldnt get both bearings off the old differential, so is just threw the other one in there with the bearings from the other transmission. vfaq never says the proper preload for the shimming for the front differential so they assume not to change the final drive bearings. :(

the transmission makes noise sometimes at idle still and i tighten the restrictor ball.

the answer is yes the do have to be shimmed depending on preload and stuff. I run the car hard, it appears to have no different effects from before i took it apart. My problem is my center diff or wheel bearing. Im not sure whats going on.

Sounds like what Im going through right now. I rebuilt it from another junk tranny that i had in my garage to get me by for a little while. Im currently about halfway done with a 5 hour drive and this bish is HOT. When i tore my original trans apart, it had a shim on the drivers side of the front diff too. I took it out and everything looked ok once i torqued it all down and used the proper shims. Im thinking I have a problem with my center diff.

When i brake mildly, i hear it knock a few times almost like a busted axle would around a turn. Hopefully I make it another couple hundred miles to where i need to be.

I guess the trans is fine other than the bearing for now. Turns out that when my roommate was helping me put the car back together, he didnt torque down the front wheels. Scary thought because the drive was close to 300 miles at around 85mph most of the way. Didnt find out until i got here.
