Is my turbo blown?

Agreed, start lookin for a new man, what turbo are you running now? And what turbo you looking for?

check for oil in the exhaust system and intake. if you have oil built up there then yes, it is blown and needs a rebuild or upgrade. if there is no oil in the exhaust or intake piping, then I would suggest you take a closer look at the drain. if you had oil in the exhaust your car would smoke pretty badly.

the stock 14b and i have been looking for an evo iii 16g and new o2 sensor housing as well. with the way my luck goes it figures this would happen

theres oil in the intake, and theres not a whole lot of smoke coming from exhaust. i recently replaced the drain with an oem return line and new gaskets. the top of the line dosent have any oil on it but the bottom of the turbo is covered

I accualy just sold a big 16g to my buddy for his 1g auto tsi and he wrecked the car rite before he put the turbo on, it only has maybe 500 miles on it it's like brand new, he accually wants to get rid of it, he only want $110 for it he has it posted in the classified section along with a lot of other parts his name on here is dsmdave, I can give you his number i you are interested?

You could always just take it off and have it rebuilt by a reputable vendor on this site...just as an option.

Oil in the intake track or exhaust is not always a sign of a blown turbocharger. If the PCV or the crankcase ventilation system is not functioning or set up improperly, it can cause oil to push past the gas control rings and out of the turbocharger. A turbo does not have a static seal as most people think, but it does have a gas control ring on both the compressor and the turbine side that is the same as a piston ring, it has a gap in the ring. If as little as 2psi of crackcase pressure is observed, it can cause oil to get past these gaps and can cause a smoking issue or oil in your intake pipe issue. Fixing your crank case issues will usually resolve the oil/smoking issues.

Now if you can move the shaft and make the wheels touch the housing, then yes...the turbo does need a rebuild.

Something else to look at since you did replace your oil drain tube, did you use any RTV on the drain gaskets? Or did you install the drain tube with dry gaskets?

If for some reason you have used RTV, there is a possibility that you've used too much and it has smushed out and is now partially blocking your oil drain tube. If the drain tube has been partially blocked, this can cause oil to back up into the CHRA and its only escape route is then to go through the gas control rings.

Again though, it boils down to can you grab the compressor wheel and make it contact the housing? If so, then yes...the turbo is damaged and needs a rebuild.

Get a new hot side for the big 16 and port it. I did that to my MHI big 16. I also ported the intake manifold.I felt a pretty good difference. It's Just an idea since you will have the set up off the car to replace the 14b.

i used dry gaskets, i try not to use rtv unless its a must or i reuse an old gasket tthats not in bad shape. the wheel did touch the housing and im going to have it rebuilt as a back up
