Well i had the turbo off to port it out.. Only to find i have quite a bit of shaft play and this:

the blades Rub against the inside of the wall a little bit :confused:
im assuming its a bad idea to put this turbo back on?

yeah it looks like your shaft is starting to go out of balance. You can put it back on if you want but it may sound like a supercharger. But to answer your question, yes its starting to go out. If its the only turbo you have laying around id run it until i got another turbo. Theres no saying how long it will last though.

+1 i got by for a year and a half in similar condition.
 
Ok thanks, good to know. So lets say i throw this back on my car, and in two months BOOM, turbo goes out.. What else am i going to destroy under the hood when that happends? What can i do besides put a different turbo on to minimize the damage to the rest of my car?
 
i personally wouldn't put it back on as you will be throwing metal dust into the engine. when it finally goes it can send chunks of metal into your engine, but not likely as it would have to travel through the intercooler first. if the exhaust side disintegrates it can fly back into the engine, but again unlikely.

Not unless your intentions are to completely destroy the turbo.

You've seemed to have caught it at a good time before any wheel damage has been done. If you put it back on it will be done in no time.

A rebuild is simple and would give you the opportunity to see what has caused the shaft play. If the bearings are scored, what caused the scoring (heat, metal in the oil, lack of lubrication, etc).

so when i read this yesterday it sparked my memory of when i tore the turbo out, and i when i went back to look at the feed lines this morning this is what i found:

Could this likely be a cause of lack of lube?
Ive read your supposed to make your own DIY setup for feed lines after you pull off he turbo the first time. Will the local hardware have most of the stuff i need to put this back together the right way or can someone point me in a direction to get started? Thanks

the coolant lines have a 24mm banjo bolt and iirc the oil feed has a 21mm? just follow the line to either the head or ofh
