Is it toast?

Ok all. I can use tools and take stuff apart and put things back together but am no mechanic. Which is why I am coming here with the question.

My 95 TSI (stock 130,000 miles) lost power on the highway. It ran but had no power, felt like I lost a couple of cylinders. I took the spark plugs out to run a compression test and when I removed the outside passenger plug (plug 1 or plug 4?) It was swimming in oil.

What could that mean?

Pull your dipstick out and see if its a milky color. You have have blown a headgasket. Are you losing coolant?

Oil is getting past your rings or valve seals or headgasket. What color is your oil? Just do a compression test like originally and this will tell you your answer.

Check the oil and coolant first for mixing before you go getting the engine up to temp and running to dso a compression test. If they are mixed dont bother with the test.

What were your compression readings? Did you also do a vacuum test? Any water mix in with oil? Any smoke coming of the exhaust? If so what color? Idle engine, unplug spark plug wire one at a time (any changes?). Do the same for injectors. That's a quick test that can help you which system to isolate (engine mechanicals block or head, spark and fuel.

he already said number 4 plug was covered in oil....do compression test and or leak down test.

Please explain, was the spark plug hole full of oil as you were taking it out, or was the oil on the bottom of the plug? If it was in the spark plug hole has oil its the spark plug tube seals. If its at the bottom of the plug either of those mentioned above.

It was all over the plug. I haven't done a compression test yet. Gonna make the time later tonight.

If the oil is covering the electrode or side of the plug that faces the cylinders, I would think something internal. If the oil is covering the opposite side of the plug and the threading on the plug it's most likely your spark plug gaskets.

sounds like head gasket but the op hasnt come back with any info so i dont know where we can go givin no comp test

I had the same problem a while back. Turns out it was on of my spark plug gaskets that come with the valve cover gasket. It was dry and had a crack. Replaced it and haven't had any problems since.

It seems to be a very common problem with my DSM's. If those gaskets aren't istalled right or are overtorqued, they leak. Causing missfire on the cylinder that has a leak.
