while changing a head gasket? i looked up the service manual and it talks about removing the camshafts, so im just curious. this is on a 420A eclipse btw.

Yes, you have to take the cam shafts because the head bolt are under the cam shafts ....

hm some people told me it wasnt necessary to remove the camshafts when doing a head gasket. perhaps that only applies to turbo models?

Or 420 a's? Mine looks like all the heads bolts are easily accessed from the top. Am i wrong? They are like huge allen wrenches.(If those are the head bolts).

I have NEVER removed my cams when pulling head, but I do have a 4g63. If they accesiable just do it.

Yea on my 4g63 they look easy enough to get to without pulling the cams. But i don't want to spread mis information.

On the 420a, when I had my talon I had to remove the cams to get at the bolts for the head.

The cam shafts will need to come out, just take the time to organize all of the cam caps in order as they come off.

4g63 models is different the head can be removed without taking off the cams.
420a is different some bolt are just under the cam shafts .
And while you are it check the flatness of your head and the deck of your block.

If you have the original shop manual from Chrysler/Mitsubishi (skip the Chiltons and Haynes), there's a diagram of the head with numbers showing the order to remove and install.

NO it is not required for you to remove the cam gears in order to doa head gasket.
