I have done the appropriate searching amongst quite a few forums and I have yet to come up with the answer I am looking for. The question is quite simple. I would like to know the difference between an internal wastegate and an external wastegate. Obviously my stock 13G turbo is internally wastegated which would cause me to assume that this would be because of the low power output. Therefore I am thinking for the higher hp performance engines I would assume that one would need an external wastegate. So, at what point would someone need to switch over to an external wastegate.

External wastegates are usually larger in diameter than an internal unit. Larger gates help run lower boost levels on larger turbos. Also, in most cases, with an external gate, you don't have to worry about excess turbo lag caused by the flapper door being blown open. Internally gated turbos are almost always cheaper. External setup isn't cheap.

Your low power output mostly has to do with the tiny turbo you have. A 13g wheel is pretty small, especially when coupled with a TD04 turbine wheel.

The borderline on which external gated turbos are used would be the fp green. On dsmtalk, there were a bunch of threads about it and some people had boost creep while others didn't with the internal setup.

Also, vendors usually charge extra for the internal setup but when you are done with the entire project, external will cost more. ($250+ for the ex. wastegate alone)

well if he has a13g then he runs an AUTO since thats the turbo it came on. and the reason most people go externally gated is to cure boost creep. i ran an external on my 14b. But i didnt have creep but i was making sure and yes its LOUd it scared the piss out of a few people.
