Interior painting [Merged 7-9] paint trim plastic plastics

Well i was trying to get the peices shiny. I painted with a gloss black, then used a clear coat and wetsanded and polished with 3M rubbing compound.

I suppose if you wanted to keep the grain that you could just sand it with 400 grit, paint, clearcoat. Thats how i did my trim the first time and it is nowhere near as shiny as my rear panels.

I know i want to paint the rest of my interior black, Im just worried about matching the oem black.

if my interior has that like leather vinyl like shit thats bumpy can i paint on it or what would i use the sand it or something how do i color the inside???

You can buy spray paint made for Vinyl. It works great. Easy to find at Wal Mart or pry any parts store. Later - Matt

Well do you have a 2g or a 1g, cuz mostly everything on a 1g pops off but some of it unscrews, on 2g's its a lot of screws but it ALL depends on what you're taking off and painting in the car, also when you get the parts u want out to paint, wash and scrub all the surfaces you want to paint of the plastics parts with soap and water, then dry and make sure they are completely dry. -Matt

WAIT....... so you can just take the vinyl off the dash and paint the plastic thats under it???? :talon:

The krylon paint is a chemical bond paint which will bond to most plastic but not all, Iv noticed that it doesnt like vinyl and most other soft plastics.

Whats under the dashboard is a very rough hard plastic frame which with some work could be made to look ok. It would require alot of fillter and sanding to get it smoothed out.

After reading and reading, What are your suggestions????

What is the best brand of primer to use.

and what is the best brand of clear to use? and what type ( gloss or semi gloss )??

Also will automotive paint work okay or will it scratch off??

Thanks
guys..

I used SEM Color coat paint. Its held up real well, even in the rear where I constantly throw my backpack against it. Just prep REAL well and make sure you take your time painting.

The only problems I had with it was I didnt shake the can well enough, so it didnt adhere to a few spots, and the few places it chipped was becasue I didnt allow it enough time to dry properly. Other than the few places I chipped during the first 12 hours, nothing else has worn off, and its been on there for 2 years.

cool,

I read that using the Bulldog adheasive before you primer is a good idea?

what are your guys comments about that?

k guys, i was thinking bout turnin all my grey plastic interior pieces a Black/Red mix, and my back seats the same way, but they're more of a pleather. Was just wondering wuts a good procedure on goin bout colorin these, like wuts some steps, wuts good to use, and is there a good way to color the pleather seats without them crackn and all that? And for the dash... is there an easy way to do it? :\

theres no easy way to paint anything. if you want the plastic pieces to last a long time take them completely out of the car and put several light coats on. let it dry for a long time (i waited atleast an hour) between coats. my advice to you would be to NOT paint anythign that gets touched alot, like kick panels because you're just gonna end up redoing them. as for the seats i have no experience with painting seats. i would imagine it would rub off onto your clothes though. save up some cash and by new seats or have yours re-upholstered the way you want. my dad knows how to re-uphoster so we just redid all the seats in in black leather (real leather). 600 bucks for the material, 0 for the work if you know someone that can do it.

i didnt use any clear coat. alot of guys do but when i tried it the peices came out looking to shiny and cheap. so i just put many light coats of SEM vinyl paint on. originally i had everything white and the paint lasted 3 years without a single chip. i just recently redid everything in black. the only bad part about starting this is you just dont know when to stop. everytime you sit in your car you'll find a new piece you want to paint!

but it is fun and people get in your car and say whoa, this is like neat and stuff. :D

Okie dokie... here are my 2 pennies... and probably at least a nickel more.

If you want the peices to last, you need to take them out of the car, at least sand them with 220 grit to scuff the plastic, clean them with rubbing alcohol or SEM plastic prep, Prime, Paint and Clear. I used 3 light coats of primer on my peices. I then lightly scuffed the peices, cleaned them again and began to spray them. I'm not sure how many layers I used, but use light coatings, and wait about 10-15 minutes between coats. That should allow the paint to become tacky or mostly dry after painting. Keep spraying light coats until you like the depth of the color. Now let that paint sit for an hour or so before you clearcoat it. I cleaned mine again before clearcoat, because i know i touched it with my bare hands, and skin oils are bad for adhesion and finish. I sprayed 3-4 layers of clearcoat, then wetsanded it with some 1500 grit sandpaper. Viola, nice colord peices, with a nice shine and no chipping for the almost 2 years i have had a painted interior. I used all Dupli-color products (primer, paint, clear)

Vinyl peices are a little more tricky. The prep work is a little mor einvolved than sanding and priming. You will need to pull the seat(s)/dash/door panel out of the car and a bucket of warm water, Dawn dishsoap, and a geen S.O.S pad. Add a few drops of Dawn to the warm water. I used dawn because it has no ammonia in it. Take that green S.O.S pad and scrub the crap outta that damn seat. Rinse it off, and repeat. You will be amazed how much shit you can clean off those seats. After cleaning go ahead and spray. You will want to use super light coats. Any drips or smudges will show up A LOT. I think i used 10ish coats on my seats.
Thus far i have had no chipping, and the vinyl bends and flexes like before it was sprayed. I used Dupli-Color Vinyl spray, I have also heard good things about SEM dye.
