Hey guys,
i plan on a running an evoIII 16g and i was wondering how much my stock intercooler will be able to handle and if a upgraded sidemount would be sufficient for this turbo. is a frontmount necessary for this turbo or could i get away with an upgraded sidemount (or if possible the stock somehow  ) i don't think the stock one will be enough for the evoIII, but if i used an injection kit, would it be sufficient then? sorry for the newb questions...thanks in advance

With a completely stock arrangement, I wouldn't recommend over 14psi on the EVO III without proper supporting mods.

If that EVO III was going on my car, I'd simply get an EPROM ECU and chip from DSM Chips to adjust the timing maps to 16 degrees max (this will let you run more boost safely) and also take into account the deadtime and global adjustments for bigger injectors. Speaking of injectors and fuel support, I'd go with a 190 Walbro (rewired) and a set of FIC 650's to give you plenty of headroom so you don't run near max duty cycle under heavy boost.

Jeff gets these adjustments very close, so it will idle like stock and be a tiny bit rich up top, which is safer than running it lean and detonating. Since the stock SMIC wouldn't be able to cool the air charge sufficiently, I'd add an upgraded SMIC and have a simple working system that should be able to run 20-21 psi safely on pump gas without the need for an AFC.

If you do a search, you'll find a user who recently posted that he's running a DejonTool SMIC on a 50 Trim and not heatsoaking on the street (although he did heatsoak after 2 dyno passes since the fans on a dyno don't come close to providing the airflow you'd see at speed on the street).

With a very similar setup to the one I've mentioned above (I have a Big 16G), I've been able to run 20psi on 93 octane with zero knock and a max of 16 degrees of timing on the stock SMIC. Keep your setup simple, remove unnecessary tuning parameters and you should have plenty of fun with the EVO III.

Good luck!

Andy

P.S. If you REALLY want maximum tuning ability, nothing beats DSMLink which you can upgrade to since you'll already have an EPROM ECU.

Get a FMIC these turbos wanna run atleast 20psi. I'm on the edge right now even with upgraded injectors and DSMLink (still on the stock SMIC). I last time I logged, I had 12 degress timing and 6 counts of knock.

I honestly think that not only the SMIC is to small and heat soaks, I think it's also a air flow restriction.

I wouldn't NOT recommend this turbo unless you all ready have atleast 550+ injectors and 190+ fuel pump.

Life will suck until you get all the supporting mods and you might end up blowing your engine before you do.

Other mods aside, (fuel pump, injectors, etc), an upgraded side-mount is fine for a 16g. Something like a Supra side-mount is plenty for most people. The stocker is also passable under average street conditions. Meaning, under 20psi and not a hot day. A good front-mount is always better, of course, but it's far from needed for a 16g.
