Installing new cams in a freshly rebuilt head?

Im not new to installing cams or working on dsm's but I've recieved my new gsc s3 cams and in the instructions it says "DO NOT USE OIL USE THE PROPER ASSEMBLY LUBE"..I've done a few cam installs and I've always use clean oil for the install, these cars are still running great and being raced.. I thought assembly lube was just a option ..I've seen on a few post that oil for install if fine, but I want to hear options and post for what people have to say to this.. Again these are new cams and a freshly rebuilt motor that hasent been primied yet

On a fresh engine it is always a good idea to use assembly lube, but if you are going to prime the engine beforehand hand than you should be fine with oil.

I think you will be fine with oil, especially if you pour it right on the lobes and rockers. Personally, i used an STP oil treatment (it is very thick) when installing my S2's.

Great cams btw, even with all the milling on both surfaces, when degreeing they still came up pretty close to the cam card.

I was going to use gtx 20-50 oil for the install, I was going to install the cam
s before the prime because I still have to get a 10an bung welded to my oil pan.

Yeah I like gsc's and I'd perfer them over kelferd's, just my prefrence.Wasent sure if they needed to be degreed, according to power divison its pointless unless you have soild lifter, just run a idle at 1000 they told me.

Me personally I prefer to use the assembly lube when mating new surfaces together. If you were gonna put old cams back in, oil would be fine. But either way you will be fine. I truly think its more of a preference. What ever feels right to you. Assembly lube is what the company recommends. Now if it said "assembly lube required for installation" then just use what it says.

starting it I doubt for a month or so but priming it will be soon in the next few days..where would I get this assembly lube?? Wouldna napa, advance, or autozone carry it?

some of the assembly Lupe may have higher concentration of zinc and phosphate that can keep the wear down at the start up. thats my best guess.

That's exactly why I prefer the lube. You want it to stay in place and not run off by the time you get everything tightened up. I'd hate to score a fresh new surface

Any local parts store should have it. Check Napa first

You can still degree them without the solid lifters with negative lash, you are not going to find out the exact opening and closing times this way, however, your centerline numbers should still be the same and that is the main thing that tells you if they are advanced or retarted over the cam card
