Installing a 1g BOV

Quick question, I have a 99 GSX, I have the 1g bov and the gasket and adapter, my question is this, should I use any kind of sealer or anything on the gasket, either on the BOV side of on the flange side? Thanks.

yes, you'll be surprised how hard it is to make a perfectly leak proof seal. dont use too little, or too much... and pressure test it when you are done.

i used a shitload of black rtv silicone sealant on mine. it went like this

-sealent(around the cylindrical end of the adapter that goes into the stock fitting hole)
-adapter
-sealant on top of the adapter
-gasket
-more sealant on the gasket
-bov

then i tightened those fking screws down as hard as i could.

heres a tip, assemble the whole bov unit, adapter plate and gasket as a piece off the car, then put it in. works alot better that way.

Okay, what kind of sealent, and how do I pressure test the BOV?

its called Black RTV Silicone Sealant, you can get it at autozone or any other auto parts store.

you can put alittle on the part of the adaptor that goes into the upper intake pipe part, but i have since removed my adaptor a few times and the sealent has worn off. so its no big deal, just tighten the adapter into the hose with the existing hose clamp really good. im sure even if you used a little sealant around where the gasket meets the metal of the bov and adaptor and tighten those screws, youll be just fine.

once you get to doing the job, it will seem easier than it sounds. have fun, its an addiction.

The gasket I got had sealant on it. I didnt use any other sealants on mine otherwise and I have no leak problems.

Pardon my n00bness, but why is the 1g BOV in such high demand? I was under the impression that stock parts can't hold much boost... is the 1g BOV a solid build and can handle upwards of 13psi, whereas the 2g stock BOV cannot? I'm just asking 'cause if the 1g bov can handle as much boost as any aftermarket bov, then I'll go get one.

Stock the 1g BOV can hold 18psi (maybe more). It is made out of steal vs our plastic POS 2g BOV. I know for a fact that my 1g BOV holds 18psi but I havent pushed it past that yet. Crush it properly and it can hold even more...20psi+.

You dont get the bling bling factor but the 1g BOV is a good unit and can be found for around 50$ making it a good bargain.

do some smart shopping on ebay and you'll pick one up for $30. I crushed mine and it holds up to 25 psi.
