install my own radio?

alright the only reason im putting this is my dad gave me a pioneer radio that was about 4 years old and i put it in and it worked fine for about a week then it started too turn on and off ever 3 sec's (not the ground wire) it was EVERY 3 secs not when i hit bumps or anything. Anyways just got a new pioneer radio brand new and they want $100 to put it in my car. only thing im worried about is if i messed up my other radio so maybe i shouldnt put this one in? or do you think it was something wrong with the radio its self.

You can put it in yourself man. Is your factory wiring harness spliced or did you get a plug n play harness to go to the radio wires? Either way will work but something either had to be wrong with the radio or the wiring connections to the radio. I would think it unlikely there be a problem with the factory wiring from the car's harness.

I had a cheap Sony raido that I used at work that was attached to a forklift. After a couple years it would do the same thing. I highly doubt it was your car causing the problem. Just get the harness like GSTClipse69 said and it'll be plug and play. You may have to splice in a wire or two depending on your setup but it'll work fine. The only thing I would check though is the voltage from the battery and possibly your alternator just to make sure tehy both have the correct output.

Do you have a multimeter? Maybe you are getting a small power surges. You said not ground but it may be that your existing ground is somehwere along the way not adequate or shorted. What you describe seems to be a groundiung issue by your description!

Its not very hard to put the radio in yourself. More than likely, if it was 4 years old, it may be a problem with the inside of the radio itself. Some older radios had problems with them, with pieces breaking off on the inside and rattling around when hitting bumps, potholes, etc.
