Input shaft in & out play?

Hey, just like the title says, is the input shaft on the transmission (not fly wheel shaft) supposed to have some in and out play? The seal is holding the fluids back but im just curious because i get about a 1/8th inch of in and out play and i know my splines are starting to wear down a little. the flywheel shaft Has NO in out play. I pulled the trans to replace the TOB and clutch fork which i had thought to be making lots of noises when the clutch was not engaged, but when i press it in the sounds went away. when looking at the ACT TOB it didnt seem like it could be the main source of the noises, so i'm thinking it could be this input shaft rattling inside? i don't know. Let me know if the shaft play there is normal. thanks in advance!


Side note: the MT-90 in the trans came out the color of gun metal metallic BMW paint ... so obviously there is something going on in there, but i have not ground any gears during pulls or anything, just the occasional grind going into reverse. Im not really trying to disassemble the trans but will if necessary. i haven't ever disassembled a trans before.

also, if i DO have to take the trans apart, what are you guys using to seal the parts together? RTV? silicone? i think there is silicone on there right now, and does anyone know the torque specs for each piece of the tranny bolts just so i can get access to check out the gears?

No the shaft play is not normal. I've seen this dozens of times and it's probably why DSMs have such a bad reputation for breaking transmissions. People (not you) assume the transmission is in good condition because it may shift ok not realizing there is a lot of play inside. 1/8" is huge. The only fix is to take it apart and replace the bearings. I typically don't reshim. Can you drive it this way? Yes. Will it last? Who knows. Permatex ultra grey is what I use. Do not run a bead, thin smear on the surface is all you need. Emphasis on thin.

thats what i was afraid of...... damnit. well its getting painted right now so after thats all set and dry, looks like im in the market for a trans rebuild. the splines are worn down anyway so its probably about that time, although im going to have to run this trans for a while longer (not beating on it) because its my only car and i need it to be drivable. this really sucks though! ill take a video of how much play there is.. i actually think its the intermediate shaft that has the play, what ever the smaller one that stick out farther is that is off centered.

it does shift very nicely with no grinds what so ever, liek i said except for the ocasional going into reverse. i was hoping the throw out bearing and clutch fork was all that would need replacing.. oh well thats life i guess, if someone can give me the torque specs for the bolts that connect the 3 pieces of trans together id appreciate it. bell housing. the middle secion, and the end cap bolts of the trans.

any 2nd opinions? i didnt measure it so i dont know for sure if its 1/8th inch, could be smaller ill measure when i get video

I'll send you a pm with a link to a video if I can figure out how to do it. What ACT clutch are you using? Also, why did you use the ACT TOB, I've heard many a person recommend the Oem TOB? I hope that link can help you figure out all of the torque specs and I'll try to send you that video later.

Paul, I had this same question while I was in my build and could have sworn when I checked it was normal to have a little bit of play (1/8th) in the trans output shaft to transfer case

Correct the output shaft to transfer case will have a little in and out play.

The input shaft is the one that goes to the crank , the output goes to the transfer case and the intermediate looks like a christmas tree . RTV ultra grey is the best i've found for sealing these transmissions. it is normal to have end play at the input shaft and the output shaft . according to the FSM the input is suppose to have like 3 to 5 thousandths of end play. i've built about fifty or so of these transmissions and every awd trans i've ever seen has always had about an 1/8 in of play on the output to the t case. i hope this helps

I'm using the ACT 2600 with the solid 6 puck. The person that assembled the engine and trans at the time had installed that TOB. Thanks for the link torque specs i believe i that printed out already but its not really helpful if you dont know what everything is called ha.

I now have an OEM TOB and Forged clutch fork and an interesting pivot ball that looks to be some kind of light alloy, not the normal steel ball, came from extreme psi, at least i wont have to use a shim for this cause the old fork was quite worn

It is retained by a detent ball and snapring, it normally has around 1/8" of in/out play. It is normal. That is also the output shaft.

That is the transmission output shaft. That's normal. The input shaft goes to the clutch and that does not have that much play. Your original post was a little misleading. Sorry.
If that shaft is worn it's easily changed without a transmission teardown.

yeah i figured i got my shafts mixed up. the splines are a little worn down sadly, would 1g shafts work as well? i have a buddy with one. glad its normal!

As long as it isn't a 90 22 spline shaft it will work perfectly fine.

Yes, 91-99 are 23 spline.

Got the trans on! Kind of a bi*** if the motor is not level when i figured that one out it became much much easier, anyway im just waiting on MT90 from extreme psi and ill be on the road again! thanks guys for all your help, thread resolved.
