Two days ago my Laser was admiting a rediculous amount of smoke from the tail pipe... smoke was literally covering the whole road i was driving down. so looked up some forums on this problem and came to the conclution that it was exsessive turbo shaft play..... took the IC piping off and sure enough there was oil in there....... i got the intake to the turbo off and there is exsessive shaft play. I was woundering if i could tightin up the nut thats holding the shaft and turbine to fix the problem...... here are some pics..... all the help is a great help.

have a video too, but cant figure out how to load it. did it the same way as the pics. but nothing. im still working on it.

No, tightening the nut will not do anything but snap the shaft. That turbo is shot, you can see that the compressor wheel is badly worn and it is also chipped.

tightening the nut wont work. stop driving it now, your shaft bushings or your oil ring are shot. ebay is a great place to get the rebuild kits for our mhi turbos. the exhaust side has a snap/o-ring that clips into the center cartridge and seals the shaft to the cartridge/body of the turbo. this little oring/snapring will wear out....OR wear the receiving grove and leak oil. take it apart and look at the very first grove from the hot side in. it will be very obvious. should look sharp and defined....good. rounded and widened out...bad. if it is still nice and defined, get the rebuild kit, and do the rebuild......mark the position of your inducer.....fancy wheel next to the nut....for re-assembly, or go get it balanced prior to the re-assembly....good luck
good eye on the chip....

thats what i thought, just a shot in the dark... im on the look out for a 14b and a stock ex mani. was thinking about getting the 14b, then rebuilding the t3 for a nother use longer down the line..... im not driving it. its just sitting in my drive way:(

yeah noticed the chip as i got it all apart. it useless now..

The chip is fine, have the Comp wheel welded in that spot and have it ground down and blended in. Hone your Bearing housing .005 over and have .005 taken off the journals. When ordering your kit request a .005 x .005 brass bearing. Balance and assemble you still have a good useable turbo there. 100$ Max. Marking the wheel and aligning your assembly will do nothing to keep it in balance. Your shaft was balance with new flinger and whole comp. wheel. Both are very worn now. Good luck, there are plenty of DSM'ers that do very good turbo work.

You can probably get a brand new wheel for 60 bucks or less, why would you even consider trying to fix it and have it look anywhere close to right. The edges of the wheel are also worn so there is going to be a larger clearance between the housing and compressor wheel.

waiting on delivery for a 14b, ex mani, and oil lines. just said F it and went with the stock turbo :laser:. hopefully it will do the trick!

still have the old t3 and exhaust manifold if any one is interested. pm me some offers.
