In car exhaust fumes

Is this a common problem with 1g. Any time I step on the gas I get a strong smell of exhaust in the cabin. Ever since I owned the car, I've had this. Recently I put a 3 inch turbo-back exhaust changed every gasket and still got a strong smell. Also I noticed my friends got the same problems. Is this common and is there a cure for this? It's got to the point where I get a gag reflex and almost thrown up from it.

Sounds like an exhaust leak to me... I would tripple check to make sure all your connections are solid, even from the exhaust manifold all the way back to the muffler. What are you using for a cat? OEM, aftermarket high flow or delete? i rode in a couple 1G's before with aftermarket exhaust and never really had noticed an issue as bad as your saying here, so.... hmmmmm.

I would definitely make sure you don't have any exhaust leaks into the cabin. Friend of mine died from sleeping with the engine running. Never woke up. He had a leak in his exhaust, goes the report.

Idk what's causing this problem. I even ran a leak detector through the exhaust, found nothing. I replaced every gasket. Also I am running no cat. I tighten every thing as well. Any ideas? Btw it's only when I step hard on the throttle.

How about at the O2 housing, did you replace that with your turbo back or is it still stock? Are you running the stock internal wastegate or do you have an external aftermarket WG set-up? Cheap and poorly installed externals have been known to leak. A leaking wastegate makes sense seeing as you only smell it under WOT.

I had this issue with one of my old 1G cars. My problem was the seal for the hatch, believe it or not. Somehow, the exhaust was able to exit the muffler and get sucked into the cabin through the area where the hatch gasket was torn up. I replaced the hatch seal and never had the issue again.
If you cant find any leaks in your ehaust system, check this.

hey, good idea.... There is an area of dead air directly behind the car while traveling down the road and exhaust fumes could very well could be sucked back into the cabin from the tailpipe.

At least in 2Gs, there are one way vents in the very back of the car for air circulation. But maybe they are faulty after all these years. Supposed to only let air out.

I did a search the forums a bit and found out about the hatch not properly sealing. I do have a piece of weather stripping that's torn. That just might be the cause because I've noticed my friends have torn weather stripping with the same symtoms. Also I have an o2 eliminated down pipe so that's one less leak to worry about. Another thing does Mitsubishi even carry our weather stripping for ours cars anymore?

Unfortunately, Mitsu no longer carries this seal. I have seen some decent ones in the scrap yards, and there is a thread somewhere regarding water leaks in which one guy mentions that he had found something that works at one of the parts stores- Autozone, Advance etc, though I believe he had to do some slight modification to the aftermarket seal to make it work...

I thought there was one on each side, but unless I'm going blind, there's only one - on the opposite side of the exhaust (Smart).

Either way, it's still possible it's getting there from a breeze.

Here, I took 4 pictures, so you can see what the hell I'm looking at as I approach it. I know you have a 1g, but follow me now. I'm sure it's similar.

In the last pic, you can see I'm sticking my finger in it and it's kind of loose.

Anyway, this thing allows air to go out in the event you have your windows open while cruising down the highway, or slam your hatch closed (lots of pressure exchange). It's a simple one way trap door.

However, I can see on mine that if the car is stationary it's basically got a bunch of slots/holes in your car angled perfectly for letting exhaust in. You can't really tell from that angle, but if you saw it up close you'd come to the same conclusion. It's not a lot though. It's not like you have an emissions tester pipe hooked up to your exhaust pipe heading into the driver seat.

Good thing the exhaust is sticking out of the back of your car and is on the opposite side. So my theory is obviously that a breeze (perhaps common in your garage or something) is making it go up the slits.

Anyway, it's probably not that at all, but I just wanted to mention it. This thing is on my mind a lot. I've always suspected it's the source of all that damn rattling noise when I'm cruising with the sunroof open.

Obviously, my theory would hold more water if there was one on both sides like I originally thought when I mentioned it.

Either way, carbon monoxide is deadly and builds up in your body and is difficult for your body to get rid of.

Therefore I think it's worth investigating if you think you have a problem. It may be possible that the ventilation gate could get caught open, or that it is just a slightly bad design.

Today I decided to tackle this problem. Basically it was the weather stripping in the hatch, as temporary fix I got a piece off my other dsm and I'm pleased to say I got about 90% of the exhaust fumes out.
