I was driving to work on the interstate the other day and my rpms just dropped to 0 but the engine was still running the car wouldn't accelerate though I downshifted to 4th and the engine revved up but the rpms stayed at 0 and the car still didn't accelerate I just coasted onto the shoulder until the car finally came to a stop and died. I tried to crank the car back up but it would just keep turning over no start though after about 15 minutes I finally got it cranked it ran for about 5 minutes then died again. I went back the next morning and it started right up on the first try I drove home without any issues but I dont even know where to begin looking for the problem. It only seems to happen when the car is at operating temperature and it only happens every once in awhile. Any ideas of what my problem could be? Car is a 95 Mitsubishi Eclipse RS non-turbo.

Check your Power Transistor plug and make sure you have a good connection there. Alot of times it will vibrate and wiggle loose causing the symptoms you explained. If you dont know where it is, its attached to the bottom of the coil pack bracket.

Edit.. Wasnt paying attention to the last sentence of his post, Was going off the car in his info on the side. My bad!

Try cleaning your MAF? My car was doing something similar to what you are describing minus the shutting off. I cleaned my MAF and all was well. I'm not saying this will work. At least worth a shot though.

or either you lost all spark, or you lost fuel delivery.... one of both... next time it does do it, check if you are getting spark or fuel... im thinking something to do with the ignition... if you said it wouldnt accelerate then you were still in gear... meaning that the rpms were still up... yet the funny thing is that your rpm gauge needle dropped so its like if you were cruising and turned the ignition key off... your rpms are still up yet your gauge drops to 0....

now that you point that out (i dont know why this didnt click the first time i read his post)... it is probably the power transistors in his ECU or the coils them self. unless the gauge cluster gets the signal for the tach directly from the coils that would make the most since. i am not sure about the 420a motors but i know on the 4g63t the tach gets the signal from the power transistor next to the coils. either the coils are going bad or the ecu isn’t sending the signal to the coils, and that would explain why his tach is going dead when it happens.

Ok the big hint here is the Tach. assuming everything else remained lit up as if the car was still running and just the tach dropped out then your problem is spark related.

I know Zip about the N/t specifically. but generally when a car looses the tach in connection with a cutout you are looking for a coil pack, or ignition module based problem. thats where you need to start. good luck.

I forgot to add it has happened before a few months ago I thought it was the coil pack so I replaced that and didn't have any more problems with it until now so I'm wondering maybe if the coil pack I bought has already gone bad or if I had another problem thats why I turned to u guys. Yeah it only happens when the car has warmed up and it doesn't happen all the time but I just started a new job and I'm still in my evaluation period so I can't take the chance of the car cutting out on me like that again.
