Idle problems galore

When i first turn over my car it just shoots to 3grand or some in rpms and sits there for min. Then it eventually goes down but then when i am driving around the idle seems to rev up and down at stop signs and lights. I tried to adjust the screw in the throttle body but did not do me any good. Anyone have any other suggestions that I can do. I am just assuming turning over the car and seeing it rev to 3 grand and some change is not a good thing to be doing in the winter, or so I have been told.

do a boost leak test, sounds like a vaccumm issue.

I am not that mechanicaly inclined (haha not even sure I spelled that right.) but yea how would I do the test for this. Any special tools needed or is this something I can do on my own. Tryin to learn all about this stuff.

You can buy boost leak testers but i just made mine. Went to home depot and bought it all.
use this. Vfaq works wonders or search.

Your idle surge could be a number of things. First off do a boost and vaccum leak as stated. The next main culplrit is the ISC. You can test the coils with a multimeter as outlined in the link below. Idle surge is very aggravating and very commom with our cars. Other contributing factors could include the egr valve, o2 sensor, mas, coolant sensor, throttle body shaft seals, fiav, biss screw, and tps. These links cover most of what you need to check for.
