I would like to learn about tire size and handling.

Hi,

I have been trying to search for threads that help me learn about different tire sizes for our cars and what setups work the best. I am searching more for something practical with appearance as secondary. After reading many threads I have come to a couple conclusions: Every setup is different, wider is better (to a point), and I have absolutely no idea what I am doing.

I am building a part time track car that I can take to the local circuit track and do some time trials and hopefully eventually road racing.
Here is a link to my build if you need more info on the car:My build

What are your opinions on running this rim and tire size? And do you think I will have fitment issues? Too wide? Not wide enough? That sort of thing.

Enkei Racing PF01 Wheels 17diameter, 8wide, 45mm offset 5x114.3 16.9lbs
Kumho Ecsta XS 245/40R17
Unknown Coilovers

The tires themselves will most likely be temporary. But the size is what I was thinking to be best. I was also thinking it might be good to go 8.5 wide on the rims... I don't know what coilovers I am going to be using quite yet but this was suggested to me: "If you want good coil overs you should look at making a set of DG units or spend a bit more and have Robi Spec set you."

I really want to learn so please give me some kind of explanation in your response, I would appreciate it very much. This is my first track car.

17x8 with 245/40 Ecsta XS is a very good choice. My only quibble is the offset of the wheels. Go with something between +38 (Evo) and +40, instead. Yes, you might have to roll the rear fender lips, but that's better than the inside edge of the tire rubbing on the shock.

As to coilovers, get in on the group buy for coaxial Konis. Nothing comes close for less than $2500.

Hmmm. Looks like those wheels only come in 45 or 50 unless I go to 8.5, then they have a 40 option...

Nice to see that I am on the right track though... I didn't give myself enough credit haha.

Any input on going 8.5 wide with a 40 offset? Would that fit better? Handle better?

Ask around about any contact, but 17x8.5 +40 is even better. A 245/40 prefers to be on a 8.5"-wide wheel for sidewall support. Enkei makes a bunch of 17x8.5s in a +40, too.

One option is to call Neil at TireRack. You want Neil, in particular. He knows Mitsus. It's also a great place to get Kumhos on Enkeis, price-wise.

Nice, thanks for the info. I'll ask some of the guys in the appearance forum if they have seen 245/40's fit on an 8.5 without too much trouble rubbing.

I have been browsing Tirerack. Nice to have a contact there.
