K so just about 20 mins ago i took my gsx out for a little test drive. Got on it hard and was shifting from 2nd to 3rd gear. After doing the shift i noticed i was able to move the shifter from 3rd to 4th gear with out the clutch pedal even pushed in and noticed no difference when changeing gears. so i just coasted it home in the gear its stuck in witch i believe would be 3rd.

I got home put it in nuatral and released the clutch pedal and the car stalled on me. when i tryed to put it in reverse and release the clutch the car starts to bog down and wants to die.

Would this have something to do with my tranny or my clutch is messed up?

I would say drain your fluid and look for shavings, that's usually a pretty good indication of an issue in the transmission. You could also ask Twicks69 what he thinks, I'm sure he's blown enough trannies at this point to know exactly what the issue is ROFL

All you did was break the shift fork most likely.

Make sure you didnt just snap a cable. Check to see the the levers on the transmission are moving with someone else moving the shifter.

+1 on that and +1 on checking your fluid for scraps.

Usually if you try shifting from 3rd to 4th and nothing happens...or you shift it into any other gear and it goes nowhere/locks up, your fork is broken. Doesn't sound fun.

Mine acted somewhat the same when I lost a few springs on the disc. They wedge in there and mess things up. You'll be able to tell when you remove the inspection cover. I had peices fall out on me.

Awsome thanks for the help guys. The trannys almost already out of the car. All thats left is just the couple bolts holding the tranny on. I didnt see anything out of norm when i removed the inspection cover.

Also forgot to mention earlier when me and some friends pushed the car forward into my driveway we noticed the whole motor was turning over when we pushed it a little bit. Not sure if this helps any.

That would imply that it is stuck in gear, as if the flywheel was just jammed with something then the motor would still not spin with the transmission in neutral.

You might have broken the 3-4 shift rail. Same thing happened in my Toyota. When I pulled it apart I found the rail snapped in two. If the cables, and clutch assembly are still in good order then it's either a fork or rail.

Update: Well i just got done takin out the tranny. Clutch still look great only about 1000 miles on it. Clutch fork not broken! Looks like its the tranny i tryed put it in nautral and the both of the shafts in the bell housing wont move.

What else could it be? Would it be cheaper to rebuild it or just buy another used one. I am on a tight money buget.

Shift rail or shift fork, just like we've been saying, they are internal in the trans.

Take it apart, figure out what parts you need. Add up the cost and see where your at. Then see what used trannys are going for and figure out what you want to do. Here's the VFAQ on Tranny Rebuild. In my past experiences with used trannys from DSMs 1 out of 5 are OK, most are junk with the 1-2 synchros being the main issues, broken center diffs in AWD models, and just being plain worn out from age and abuse. I've seen stock used go for 250-600 bucks.

It may be time to pony up for a good reliable trans. You may be able to piece one together from another bad trans, but the results usually aren't that great.

Transmission -- pull it and send it out for rebuilding. You just broke stuff. (likely a 3/4 shift fork and maybe a 3/4 rail end). These parts are cheap in the overall scheme of things, but if anything else broke, or got damaged, you will be expecting some higher parts costs.

I would strongly suggest rebuilding over purchasing a used transmission. Talk to the transmission rebuilders and get a quote for repairs, but they still cannot give you a solid idea until they take apart the transmission and do the repairs.

I would reccomend the following:

Jack @ Jackstransmissions.com (www.jackstransmissions.com)
Jon @ TRE (WELCOME TO TRE   WE SPECIALIZE IN MANUAL TRANSMISSION REPAIR)
John @ Shepherd Transmissions (Sheptrans.com)

Otherwise, I do rebuild transmissions for customers, but I strongly reccomend going with a major company due to the fact of their ability to service out-of-state customers are much better than mine. I regularly do in-state/local transmission rebuilds for these cars.

All three of these shops are top-notch, with quality parts, and experience and fair pricing due to their high volume of sales.

Hey guys i have been doing alot of research and reading. I think i am just gonna try and tear down into the tranny and replace what is broke. But also while im doing this i would like to just replace the
synchros while im into the tranny. If anyone has any experience with doing this task ANY advise would be helpfull!! I will be following the vfaq tranny rebuild steps.

It might be the hub and sleeve for 3 and 4. Same thing happened to my car and thats all that it was. More the likely your tranny ground up whatever came apart so i would look over EVERYTHING when you do tear it down. Here is what it looked like when i drained my tranny.

UPDATE: I just got done takein the tranny all apart and found the 3rd to 4th shift fork was broke. It broke right were the little pin goes. Also my 5th gear would also grind a little. The one of the pics below is one of the 5th gear syncros does is look pretty bad? Also i noticed the tranny has been redone before cause on the writing on the center differential.

The paint markings on the center diff are like that from the factory.

As for the 5th gear synchro, replace it. It is a cheap part. As for the shift fork, that is common.

Be sure to inspect the hub and sliders for engagement face wear as that is a much more likely culprit for damage or wear if a synchro is worn. Also, be sure to inspect the gear engagement teeth faces to make sure that they are not dinged up from a worn hub and slider. Also, inspect the hub outer spline faces (the part the slider slides on) for uneven wear or galling.

Also, could you do one favor for me? Could you please count the number of teeth on your front differential's ring gear? Is it 57 or 58-teeth? As well, could you tell me the casting part numbers on your bellhousing? If you are wondering what I am talking about, here is a link of my question: http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/151640031-post16.html

I am looking for both the 17-digit part number, and the "W5M332"XXXX" numbers, cross reference to my records for the proper parts you will need to refresh your transmission. Then I can further help you get the part numbers you need to purchase from Mitsubishi.

From the pictures, it looks like an early 1991 transmission, but I will need the rest of the information to properly deduce what month it was built in since the parts do vary in the 1990-1992 years quite a bit.

Thanks!

I have more than enough experience in this.

Do you have a 7-ton+ shop press? Bearing Splitters? Snapring pliers? These are the MAIN tools you will need, but there are an array of other tools that make it easier as well.

Thanks so much for the help tim! Im really not sure how to do the stuff i quoted. If you have any pics of the stuff your talking about that would be very helpfull. I will get all the other info for you here really soon.

The front diff has 58 teeth. On the bell houseing the only thing i can see is W5M332"NPXV and on the little sticker is says BLU0836 NPXV. THe 17 digit part number is 4A3CT64U8ME091996.

Thanks, let me know if you need anything else.

Also i dont have any of the tools you listed above. Does auto zone rent them? As for the 7 ton press a buddy of mine does at his shop.
