Today, I was going to put some Synchromesh in my transmission. I got out the 17 and 24mm sockets and a ratchet. The 17mm was on VERY tight, as expected. I used my breaker bar, and it felt like it was turning, but no... it stripped. What should I do? I tried vice grips, that didn't work either.

Gator grip? Flare wrench?

Try and easy-out or some bigger vise grips.. Why the fill plug is in that tight, I have no idea. Invest in a new bolt also.

At least you didn't make the mistake of opening the drain plug first and be stuck with a car that you can't run cause you can't get fluid in it.

ok here is an idea

want to save your self alot of time and money?

explanation....
first of all you have to go find a junk yard that has the part...theres gas money
second your gonna have to pay for the damn oil pan and ummm woooohooooo thats a hairy thing right there!!!

so do this..... take off the oil pan (your gonna have to do this anyway and get a new pan gasket)

take your oil pan and beat a dent from the inside out on the bottom drill out a hole in the dent get a nut and bolt.. next weld the nut o0n the inside of the oil pan might cost ya 5 bucks if that...put it all back together than MAKE SURE YOU USE A LOCK WASHER WITH THE BOLT... problem solved took ya 30 minutes and $5 or $10

TRANSMISSION

Some of you guys sound like the mechanics who ruin DSMs

oil pan??? he stripped the fill plug on the transmission....

Heh, I thought I misread it at first... Where the hell did they get oil pan from?

Easy outs can usually be found at your local sears. They are sort of a reverse drill bit (it turns counter clockwise, which hopefully, unscrews the bolt when it lodges into the bolt).

I've also seen them where you drill a hole into the bolt, and then hammer the easy out into it. It may or may not work for you. Be cautious on drilling because you don't really want those metal filings inside the transmission.

Yikes. is that my only option? I'm afraid to take risks involving metal shavings in my transmission.

Jesus, everybody, just STOP.

Do you mean you've rounded the head off the fill plug? Hit it with a propane torch, and use huge damned vise-grips or a pipe wrench on it. Or, try the Craftsman bolt removers.

Yeah, that's exactly what i did.

You don't have to drill all the way through the bolt, so there aren't worries of metal shaving unless you go all the way through. Just drill enough to get the the easy out in.

Have you tried Defiant's suggestion of a propane torch and a bigger set of vise grips?

I haven't tried a torch yet. Is that safe for trannies? I bought the biggest set of vice grips that the auto store had. They're 10" long, and they expand wide enough to fit on the bolt. I don't really see how going bigger would help. But if you have an explanation, please feel free to tell me.

I think i'm gonna stop by sears tonight, and pick up some bolt-outs or whatever they're called. Good thing it's pay day, funds are hurtin'! :|

^ craftman club is going on right now!! You get 10% off everything that is craftman so make sure you pick up craftman and tell them your a member......and if they ask for your card just tell them no but i got my phone number and use t his phone number.... 913-341-6282
trust me you'll thank me for it later.

A bigger vice grips should work. You have more clamping force and more leverage for more torque.

Bro if your stripping bolts and asking how to get them off, PUT THE BLOW TORCH DOWN AND STEP AWAY FROM THE VEHICLE, now do what everyone has told you to do and go to Sears, throw down the 20 or so bucks and get the bolt removers. Trust me that it wont be the only time that you will need them.

Brew :talon:

hey i stripped mine too heres what i did,

-took my vice grips
-tightened the scew on the vice grips really small
-used the force of god to get it to snap shut on the rounded bolt
-used pipe over the vise grips as breaker bar
-undid bolt
-undid screw, threw vice grips at wall to seperate from screw

n get a new bolt with a washer

another idea for getting it off if it is indeed rounded
take a file and file 2 sides flat and get an open end wrench or put the vise grips on the 2 flat spots this has worked for me removing stripped bolts on many other things good luck :thumb:
