i need help [4th gear in auto not working]

ok i have a 97 auto an my 4th gear is not workin .... what can that be.... it goes from working to nothing... in like 1 day...thanks for any help you can give me

4th gear? As in overdrive?

It can be a number of things, give us some more symptoms.

ok I will be just driving around the 110 mark an its suppose to change into 4th around there if not mm I have the O/d on an everything...I have a Trans cooler an I installed a temp gauge on it cause I thought it was overheating but that's reading fine..... like I said it just started one day out of the blue

how long does it take you to get to 110 in a N/T? Have you tried playing with O/D to see if it will come back on by toggling OD on and off?

well i got a ticket goin like 150 in a 55 in under a mile so not that long .... an yeah i did try that an nothing happens ...

I'm not sure but it could not be the tranmission. When you floor (step on the gas hard) the car right before it automatic shifts gears does it hesitate alittle bit? If there is hesitation when the pedal is push down hard it might be the TPS (Throttle Position Senor) going bad or is bad.

My friend had a similar problem with car but it was honda accord not an eclipse 420a. The check engine light did not show up too. Replacing the TPS solve the problem

If it is your automatic tranmission indeed, its about to go out maybe. Take to a trannmission shop before its took late. Tranmission labors can cost an arm and a leg. From $500 to $2000 plus. Automatic tranmission will go out if you abuse it or without proper maintenace. Have you done automatic tranmission oil change? It is recommend you do it every 6 months. A automatic tranmission flush is also a good thing to do.

Doing yourself would cost about from 15 to 30 dollars for a automatic tranmission oil change. That is a quick drain and refill.

Lube Shop will do flushes/change for about from 70 to 120 dollars.

Now do you abuse your automatic tranmission? Do you shift it while you drive? Do you place it in netural gas it hard and drop it into drive? Those are not recommend. It would put alot of wear and tear on the automatic tranmission gears.
