i just bought a 91 laser rs turbo. didn't even have a chance to check the timing belt before i shredded it. is there a break down guide or procedure dealy? or, is the vehicle maintenance guide thing(big thick shop manual) all i need to tear down the top half of the engine? i know i need to, at least check, probably replace valves. just looking for a general idea of what i need to replace. thanks

i have been trying to get through it all.. but i haven't had time with work and school.. there is alot of info. i'm trying to soak it all up cause' i have no idea what i got myself into when i bought this car. but it's amazingly fast. i beat a 2001 pontiac GTP. next day car dies and t-belt is shredded. im trying to get as much info ast possible. thanks

Sounds like the perfect chance for your to rebuild your head. Get it cleaned up and fitted with better parts. ;)

i was told that the damage that has probably happened will take about 500 to fix.. that's about it for this paycheck coming friday.. what kind of work is recommended.. basic cleaning.. or porting.. cause i really don't want to mess with the air\fuel mixture all that much.. as i said before.. really new.. but lookin to take in a shatload of info and advice. or what kind of goodies should i work to throwing into it. cause i can do the work if i have minimal directions. yea yea.. im a newb

Is that for the head or the Timing Belt replacement only? The timing belt kit can be found cheap. You might aswell get yourself a nice Mitsu Multi-layer HG so you don't have to later. Once you take the head off the stock head bolts are NOW useless. I suggest the ARP headbolts, they will not stretch like the stock equiped ones.

As for head work, I would look around at some of the sites that do DSM engine work and see what types of upgrades they have done. Most are expensive, but most of that is in the worksmanship, if you can call it that. OMG

If you want specifics about replacement parts make a list in order like this...

1. Valves

2. Springs

3. Retainers

4. blah blah blah... :p

That way people can copy and paste your list to add suggestions for you. :thumb:

i was checking out random things i would need in case i needed to rebuild.. i have only really found one kind of valve. and i have heard of the hg. didn't know the head bolts were useless after they were taken out. hopefully i can afford a few upgrades while im working on it. i still need to get a replacement rad. ther is a half inch crack in the current one but hasn't blown yet.. but i found a stock replacement for 75 so that should save some money. thanks again.

where is the best place to pick up parts at. couple sites are retarded. and some just don't have what im looking for.

do valves always go when you break the timing belt in these cars or is that just worse case scenerio? and i have been readin up some on fuel cut, and how it can be a problem just by chopping the air filter can. how can i NOT ever experience fuel cut, cause' i have heard it's not fun. i am planning on replacing my exhaust and all intake including intercooler this summer before i have to head down to school.. and also.. are these cars reliable enough to drive for 200 miles to school and back.. of course checking stuff and such before and after the trips.

Worst case senerio is a piston has a hole punched in it (not likely) and you now have to get it replaced and the cylinder checked for other problems.

Your answers will be best answered whe you remove the head.

By replacing the stock fuel pump with a higher unit (190lph and a rewire or a 255 lph with an AFPR). It all depends on how far you want to take it. Anything over the size of the 16G family will benifit from the 255 senerio I posted. Otherwise the 190lph and rewire is your best/cheapest bet. You won't NEED an AFPR for that either.

If you are doing this on the weekends you should be fine. Just make sure you have checked over the car like any other car that would be making that trip. If you are keeping mildly modded you are fine. It is when you start making it an ALL out strip car you need to worry.

See if this thread helps at all....and this one too.

ya hit me with a couple weird ones there.. im imagining the "lph" stands for liter per hour.. probably wrong though.. and AFRP? that and what's 14g and 16g..? that has confused me.. and where does one pull a pump like that and how do i "rewire". im unbelievably uninformed when it comes to these cars. this is the car i plan on learning to work on cause it's my daily driver for the next three years at least. thanks for the help

Time for baby steps.... :p

14b is the stock turbo for a manual 1G DSM 90-94 (best stock turbo you can get)
13G is the stock turbo for an automatic 1G DSM 90-94

T25 is the stock turbo for both the manual/automatic 2G's
The 14b is sometimes put on a 2G as an upgrade because it flows more. Don't get rattled when you so it in there profile. It is a good enough mod to warrent replacing the T25.

16G and all others you read about on here are upgrades or replacements.

The rewire is a mod you can do a search on. I am running a 255 LPH (yes you were right on description) and did not need to do this. The rewire is to compinsate (sp) for the stock wire that is not strong enough to keep up with the pumps demand.

AFPR is an "Adjustable Fuel Pressure Regulator" you need this when pushing a high volume of fuel through a stock system that is not meant to see it all.

aaaahhh....... finally.. knowledge.. i have been through those FAQ's... i have been through almost all of these threads.. it's just difficult when i haven't dealt with anything the other people are dealing with yet.. i haven't torn down my engine yet and figured out what everything does.. that comes this weekend when i get paid. thanks for the help. my current shopping list looks like this:
mitsu 4 layer HG
ART headbolts
front rotors
new downpipe.. i don't know why but all manuals i have ever had. i have horrible luck with those stupid flexpipes. engine mounts must be bad or something. i should have enough for the exhaust and intake upgrades before summer ends..
any advice on a company to look for. and where to find the 190lph pump, is that a junk yard find or online purchase?
