I just wanted everyone's opinion on a car

I am looking at a 1990 GSX right now, it has 130,000 miles on it, pretty good condition, the only problem is the ac doesn't work, it is not modified at all, it is owned by an older man, who says he is a neat freek. He has driven it mostly highway miles from ny to nj. he lives about 20 miles from me. he wants $3,800. do you think this is a good deal or should i look for something else.

Compression test it. And the a/c could probably just need to be recharged with refrigerant, that's what mine needed. You probably could talk him down to $3000.

what i would do is find out the cost of the freon i heard some shops charge around 50$ a pound but I'm not really sure how much it is for that. well find out the cost and have it taken to a local mech. and see if everythings in tact. and what is fount to be wrong with the car talk him into deducting the cost to fix or replace it and come out with a sale dollar amount for the transaction.

edit: on the aircondionting side alot of cars i think after 94-95 dont use freon and its not being used any more due to pollution. so now you can easily convert your system from CFC(chlorofluorocarbons) R-12 to the safer HFC(chlorofluorocarbons)R-134a. The average price to retrofit the air conditioning system is $50.00 to $150.00 more than the costs of other repairs.

If everything looks good, go for it. I would try and talk to him down to like $3500. I am sure you could get it for that much. If not, I would go looking somewhere else. Good luck .

Has a new starter, brakes, and emergency brakes

The rear brakes are the emergency brakes. There are no separate pads nor shoes to replace.

The AC may be able to be changed over to 132a. Check with AC shops in your area.

I have talked to the guy again and he said that the problem with the radiator is just a small hole in it, and he said the radiator could be replaced for about $150, he said that he tried putting more freon in the car, but he has narrowed the problem down to the radiator.

is the raditor bad or the a/c condensor?


if the raditor has a whole in it it has nothing to do with the a/c not working


if the condensor has a whole in it then it leaking all the freon out


i think 3,800 is a little high,

also ask about the
Timing Belt and Balance Shaft belt replacement
also timing belt tenisor

if this was ever done or not if not you will have to do right away and if he has to think about it do it anyway

The car is in almost perfect condition. The problem with the a/c is the condensor, not the radiator. The body is very nice and the interior is just as good. As soon as i start making more money i'll start my modifying, but what of the free mods do you think that i should do. Once again it's a 1990 Eclipse GSX.

A good AC shop may be able to solder that leak. Even on aluminum.

$2,000.00-$2,500.00 is what i think. $3,800 is about $1,000.00 more then i would pay for a NICE 90.

Cause if it's the original turbo, it will be going out soon. $600 out of your pocket.

Timing belt (along with water pump, tensioner, balance shaft belt, pulleys, etc..) should have been done at 120,000 if not, at least $500 out of your pocket. You need to see receipts to confirm it was done.

If timing belt does not get done, you will end up destrying the top half of your motor: $1500.00 dollars.

And all the other things that go out on a DSM with that many miles on it: Crankshaft pulley (harmonic damper), ecu, ISC, tranny, clutch, are some of the potential parts that will need to be replaced if they have not been already.

Does it use oil? Does it smoke? When was the clutch replaced last?

If all maintenance has bee done (timing belt and related ARE maintenance) then I would consider paying more then if it has not, cause that shit is spendy. So is the turbo.
