i think this is the right place for this. if not i apologize before hand.

i bought a 97 Talon Esi a few months ago, and now that i have it running smooth i have a few questions.

i was wanting to put a turbo on it, specifically an HMI EVO III 16g, but i dont know what all would be needed to do so. i already know i would have to upgrade the internals to handle the added stress, but would i need anything else mechanically? and then (heres where i show how much of a noob i am) how do i hook up the turbo? :ohdamn:

and now my next question. how do i hook up the IC, and what is a preferred brand? also, what does air-to-air and air-to-water mean?

im new to these things, so please dont be but so harsh, im learning.

I would be much easier to just buy a turbo DSM than perform the swap. There is a lot you need to do to turn the N/T to go turbo and it'll cost a good bit of money as well.

You'll just need to search the forums for the info and I'm sure that members that have done the swap will chime in as well.

Just my $0.02

Yeah, do to your lack of experience, I would recommend the same. Get a 4g63t. It will make your life alot easier. You can find them cheap on the forums and C-list. Keep your eagle as a daily driver as you might need it if you buy a turbo car.

Well in order to "hook up" a turbo, you would need an exhaust manifold designed for a turbo car, as well as a turbo back exhaust, both of which can either be found here in the classified section, or on a performance shop/website such as punishment racing, or extremepsi. As far as intercooler goes, you usually only see water to air to water style IC's on cars making big power, but what you would probably want to look at is getting a full front mount IC kit including piping, which should include piping to route from your turbo, to the IC to the throttle. Again this could be found either on the classified section on this site, or online performance shops. In fact punishment racing has a pretty inexpensive kit, I think it's around $350, and it has a pretty good rep with everyone I've talked to. Now that I've gone into this much detail, I would honestly suggest that you sell what you have and buy an already boosted DSM, here's why, it simply isn't cost efficient to turbo an N/A. Especially if your car has the 420A motor, if you have the 4g63 motor, it is a little easier, but still just not worth the effort. But if you have some sort of sentimental attachment to the car, and you are ready to spend some serious time and some serious cash I say go for it, there are plenty of other threads on this topic that I would suggest you search for, and that should be able to help get you started, either direction you take, good luck.

i've done the swap, it isnt that bad...i knew nothing about turbo systems before i started, but ended up figuring things out as i went along. one thing you'll find out is the t3 or t3/t4 is pretty much the only turbo that will bolt up to manifold's for the 420a. yes, you can use an adapter plate...but thats just another thing to bolt on. Personally, i wouldnt want to go back to a n/t dsm. I'm only on stock internals, but the car is plenty fast for street purposes and the occasional drag race.

Was it worth the work? Have you taken it to the track, if so what did you run? If you could go back and do it again would you, or would you rather have started with turbo'd DSM? I'm just curious, it seems impressive to be able to do this swap successfully, but I'm trying to figure out why people do it.

It really isn't complicated for someone who can use a wrench. And why do it you ask. Well, most of the time its what you have, so you do it. The only thing I would suggest is to get a GSX, otherwise there is no point in selling it to get another fwd. And if you try hard enough, and search for good deals you can turbo your car and build the bottom end for around 3-4k (considering you do all the work yourself).

Turbo'd mine for under a grand...Couldn't be happier. It's pretty quick, makes cute wooshing noises, and insurance is half of what it would be for me on a gst/gsx. Reliability went down the drain until I got all the bugs worked out, but now it's my DD that I still get to have some fun with.

sorry it took me so long. i'm only new to turbo cars. ive been working with domestics for a couple years now, so as far as general mechanics i can do the work. i was just wondering what all i would need for this engine, for the swap. i guess i should have made that a little clearer so thats my fault on that one, and thanks for the links, i figured it was on here already, but i guess i just havent figured how to best use the search engine because this is a HUGE site.

For a basic low boost (~8psi) turbocharged 420a, you don't have to do anything to the engine internally.

Yeah, that link will be your bible...There are a few things I'm sure you'll have to do differently but this is a GREAT starting point.

I'd also really suggest going the T3 route, and save yourself some headaches. I ran a 14b and a 16g initially and regret it due to lack of adapter plates that didn't cause exhaust leaks.
