Just a few questions.. Picked up a hyundai valve cover because my stock one is cracked.

1) The baffle has rust, should I replace it?
2) The nipple for the line to the intake is missing, what options do I have for replacing it? I'm not really interested in AN fittings.

Thanks everyone.

You could also drill it, thread it and tap it with a fitting. Also a very east option.

And for the rust. You can replace the baffles, but the replcements I've seen on here are custom made and super pricey. I'm not even sure they are available any more?

I'd try an extended dip in clr, probably repeating over the course of a week. Otherwise, that vc as is, is junk.

CLR might eat aluminum similar to purple power eating alum. I'd test on other scrap piece to double check first, maybe just on al foil. You should check into welding your cracked vc but take it to an experienced welder. Your old vc has been absorbing years motor oil sipping thru the crack, is cast, & will difficult.

The rest of the VC is in great condition though. If I could find another baffle for a decent price it wouldn't be a big deal but they seem pretty expensive. I'll try to find another baffle in a junkyard and replace it

For another valve cover try car-part.com then you can get baffles and an extra cover. That site you can search all junkyards makes it easier to find specific parts

Replacing a stock for stock baffle could be tricky. Due to how the baffle is press fit with the aluminum "buttons".... or just pressed down aluminum posts, like a rivet.

And, to further expand on your "I'm done buying used parts from DSM guys" statement. Was the vc photographed? Did you see pics of it top and bottom? I, as well as thousands of others have purchased parts with caution, asked questions, and had a reward at the end of the road. Since 99/100 parts are used, ask questions, ask for pics, mileage... all of it.

I've pulled valve covers off in the junk yard and left them on the ground because of burnt chunky oil build up. If you saw this inside and out and still bought it, the blame is on you. And not having a plan to pony up and fix it with a new, laser cut, tig welded, amazingly expensive diy baffle....

I've got 3 back ups, one bought on here, one from a jy, and one from a local part out. I made sure they were clean before I paid the $40-$75 for them.

And clr will only remove a finish on aluminum, if used as directed. It wont pit, eat or weaken it.

I'd really either look into getting into what you don't want to on this vc (an fittings, custom work on the baffles, powdercoat) that's the only way to make it worth the money you spent, is to spend more.

I honestly still wouldn't trust the rust being completely removed if you soaked it for months in clr baths. All it takes is a few specks of it in the oil and you have a new motor on your plate. Replace the baffle with a new one, or replace the whole vc.

Yeah. That's easy to say as someone who has been into DSMs for awhile. But for us new guys who don't know what they're looking at entirely quite yet they're too many members looking to screw us over for personal gain.

If you've been around cars even for a day, you should know rust = bad....

If you've been around cars even for a day, you should know rust on parts inside the engine, the internal "go" of the car in its entirety = "even more badder"...

Its not a dsm thing, its just some general knowledge.

Sorry dude, but you didn't look at what you bought. Some people call the vc junk and tell you you need to drop a few bucks in it, and you call out an entire community of people who legitimately swap parts every day, in "as stated" condition whether it has 2 miles or 200,000. If you bought it blindly, again, that isn't the dsm communities fault.

He/she didn't force your paypal account to depleat in money, thus forcing a shipment to your door with a rusty part inside.

The fix is: new baffles, new valve cover completely. Hang it in the shop.

I just find it offensive that you willingly bought a part that you could have requested any information on, including clear as day pics. And because the part, as is, isn't usable, "dsm guys" selling parts online are now all swindlers...

You can try soaking it in a few different things ..... there's tons of videos on YouTube show how to remove rust from metal....you can try metal rescue. . Coke cola . Apple cider vinegar. How ever you go about it do some research before you go throwing in the towel. Sometime things look worse then what they really are

So you the guy that bought that off eBay? Just jiggle out the nipple off yers and put it in yer other one.

Nope just in the market as it were. Got a black one with red letters from a dude. Trying to find mounting hardware is starting to get annoying though.

These should work or anything along these lines if you're referring to the bolts and washers.

Brand: HILLMAN
Bolt Size: (8) M6-1.0x40mm sku # 08236 72473 (4 pcs each pack) You just need (2) packs <-- these are only for the outer 8 stud holes on the elantra valve cover.
Washer size: #12 Flat washers stainless sku#08236 73619 (20 pcs each pack) You only need one pack and the rest can be used for the other bolts if you wish.

I would never install it on my own engine.

Think you can clean al the rust you see, but you don´t see whats inside the baffles.
You said other than that it is in good shape, cosmetics are not important when you have that much rust inside.
Try to find one at a yunkyard, this is a cheap and easy to find part

Yeah. That's what I was thinking.
