hello all, i have done quite a bit of searching and i can't seem to find the answer to my question. i'm wondering what my hp level would be if i turn my boost up from 5 psi (stock level) to about 13-16 psi. it's a 1992 laser rs and i have all the maintenance up to date. i also installed a mechanical boost gauge because i here the stock ones are garbage.

another thing, is it normal for me to be boosting about 5psi on stock setup? i read it was 7-12.. 5 just seems a little low, also my vac is reading around 24psi at idle.

Thanks in advance, Dan

24 hg is too much vacuum for your engine. sounds like a bad guage.

When I idle my guage sits at 16 in. hg. and on a decel from 4000rpm the guage sits at 20 in. hg

When the car is off does the guage sit at 0?

Take the hands you typed this with an slap yourself with them. Another noob who doesn't understand fuel-cut. How is 15psi getting you close to this 'fuel-cut'? Literally, there's zero logic to this. Is there a magic feeling or warning only your DSM gives to let you know of this impeding doom?

You're so wise. Great advice. You should be the head wiseman here on Tuners. Your knowledge overwhelms every inch of my puny brain.

Do you only post when your mad at the world? Internet tough guy maybe? Instead of dissing someone trying to help how about posting something useful?

Why all the hate? Hes off to a good start, maintenance - check, boost gauge - check. Hes not asking to how do i build a 600hp dd or anything. and im sure he means -24 at idle, which is fine for a cold start in a cold area(Canada). Find the boost leak, fix it, and turn it up to 15psi and enjoy.

General rules of thumb.

+1PSI =+10WHP on your average dsm making 180-300whp
1lb/min = 10whp on race fuel/E85 9whp on pump gas, on your average modded dsm
-100lbs = +10Whp on a 3000lb car making around 250whp
+10Whp = -.1sec +10mph in the 1/4mi in a 3000 car running mid 12's

So theorecitally, raising your boost 5 psi should give you about 50 more whp, a .5s quicker et, and a 5mph better trap speed. If your car is in a decent state of tune, and you can drive it, these results will be pretty realistic.

5psi at wot is not normal. What gauge are you looking at. The stocker is not very accurate at all. Some aftermarket gauges are not known to be accurate.

Stock boost is either 7-11psi, or 11-14psi. I believe its the latter. Either way, if you run cheap fuel, or don't have your timing set right you will run the lower number. Your car keeps track of knock sum, and if it sees lots of knock it will slowly switch over to a much less aggressive timing map, and pull back your boost.

Reading a rough area for you? I didn't "hate" on anyone. I wasn't aiming anything at the O.P.. I was informing the two people I quoted that their advice is wrong. I'm sick of seeing misinformation being spread around. I hate the world!!!!!!

So give out some correct info instead of smart ass comments. I don't think ive ever seen a useful post from you. Just 3 page rants about how intelligent and philosophical you are and how dumb everyone else is. Its pretty annoying and your not impressing anyone. I mean the entire first page of your tech posts is completely useless post whoring. just chill out and have some patience for new members trying to learn.

Inc. 3 page rant. :ohdamn:

I wasn't stating that "too much" meant he could harm his engine in any way,
I meant that being a stock engine with 6 digit mileage he is not making 24 inches of mercury and I still stand by that. I didn't post back last night because
I went to bed...you are not that important to me to stay up and and listen to you
bicker how your's holds 20+ @ idle, I wasn't even talking to you anyway.

Also like how some of these guys are quoting factory specs about a car that has
been driven since 92'. Sometimes I wonder where these guys brains are.
The OP clearly stated that he has kept up with all maintenence, nowhere did
he write "oh and I switched out the cams for some throaty aftermarket ones"
jeez man, go tweak your car and see how much more vacuum you can squeeze
out of it....

And 20psi on a 16g is fun.

Try 26-28psi then tell me what's really fun.:D

Oh, OP we don't condone "Bench-racing" here. You wanna know how much HP you're making with the 1,XXX factors contributing to it - take your car to a dyno.

^LOL

I hate the whole "1psi=10whp" thing, cause 16psi on a 14b is not the same as 16psi on a 16g

Put a 7cm hot side on the 14b and it is. Its a rule of thumb anyway, jerkoff. Maybe you should stop nitpicking peoples posts and spend some time getting your car out of the 15's.
