ok i had a head ported its a bare head its ben ported to match the intake and exhaust manifold gaskets tell me what you guys think of this

This is coming from a DIY kinda guy... but that port job is 2nd rate, at best. My buddy has a SBR fully ported head on his Stroker motor and it would put that to shame ANY DAY. In fact, as someone who has only ported a few turbos for his personal needs, "I" could have put that port job to shame. It doesn't look very consistent, to say the least. It looks like someone slopped through the job and didn't take the time to keep the original form.

Porting isn't hard if you don't rush it. This was obviously a rushed job where someone didn't want to take the time to ensure quality nor performance.

As an amateur who's seen professional work, I'd grade it, "Sloppy". :notgood:

well i may toss some valuves springs retainers and cams in it...i dont know the port job doesnt seem horrible but ill see when it goes on whenever that is

I agree. i'm not really one to bash but whoever did that could have done a much better job. honestly from the looks of it in my unproffesional opinion that surface might actually make the air flow more turbulent

The head on my buddy's SBR ported head looks so much more extreme.

The exhaust ports are very smooth. So smooth they are comfortable to the touch while still retaining their roundess. Impressive and worthwhile.

The intake ports are BEEFY. Massive to say the least, but they still retain that 'rough' grind one might find with a 80 grit bit that has been ground out to the limits to match the largest of the large drag manifolds and still provide that desirable atomization that people are constantly seeking with 'tough ground' intake ports.

I think it's great that you gave it a shot; but, like the guys above said it does look sloppy and rushed. With more time and effort put into it would have turned out better.

what tools did you use? go back threw and clean it up make sure they all look the EXACT SAME!

As a general rule of thumb, you don't usually touch the bottom of the port. Generally you raise the roof of the port, that way the air has a larger turning radius. Additionally, you don't wan't the ports to be excessively large. That kills port velocity, which kills the VE of the engine.

I'd have to agree with bastarddsm, head porting isn't as simple as porting other item. You don't just hog out the ports as big as possible (which looks like what was done) & expect it to perform great. To tell you the truth, that "port" job may actually hurt performance vs the stocker.

Those ports might work with bigger valves. Ive seen lots of cases of "port jobs" actually hurting the flow, in cases like those just covering the corner of the port increased the flow by as much as 25%. Having a flow bench at your disposal makes learning how to port so much easier.

Doesn't look bad for a home job.

Although with current technology I think the best method is to get the head CNC ported and only do hand blending to balance the ports.

A 1G head unported is very efficient and I see no need to port it unless you plan on going BIG(600 WHP+)

the exhaust ports look to be gasket matched to the 2 piece metal gasket which is huge and not necessary, the consistancy on the exhaust and intake ports doesnt look very good, u can especially see this on the dividers, the finish on the ports isnt a finish that i would put on one of my heads so that being said i would give it a 2 of 10.

whoah! next time send it to me... I'll show you pictures if you want

The factory features (shapes, pockets, etc.) need to be exaggerated, but they have been practically eliminated... big no no.

Also, there was obviously very little or no measuring done.

and, not to make you feel bad, but that thing is hacked... at the very least the porter could have invested in the right bits.

as mentioned above the ports are opened up too far... which is not a big issue if your manifold has a port that size or larger

BTW get your money back... somebody lied to you

edit: you can still fix it, but you may have problems sealing on the exhaust

talon187 i feel your pain talk about a serious ass whooping, hey just dont loose your motivation over that whoop ass though i have read articles where the guys with the big v8's do hand porting and get good results,oh and i was watching nopi television where a ford focus went against an evo and mini and the evo head was hand ported and got great gains it can be done but you just have to play around with it till you get it.Ps i use negative remarks as motivation

heres the finish u should be going for...........

I need a better camera besides my cell phone

mirror finish... notice the angle of the bowls and the tear drop ports... a lot of tedious work was done to the short side radius

also the exhaust ports are knife edged, and then DULLED..... too sharp and they melt

this is before replacing the guides

all motor Mike hit it on the head,
Can't beat a CNC port.
The pure SIZE of the exhaust port on that job is insane, Thats bigger than a stock gasket!
Look online to see some good porting guides. A tip is to get some blueing and scribe a line so they tops/bottoms are all on the same plane. Carve to the line etc.

I just noticed how low that exhaust port goes, did you put a stock exhaust gasket up to it?
Best thing you could have done is just port match it and smooth out the runners.

maybe it's just the pictures, but the exhaust ports look oblong. I've got a head that someone did by hand and it looks OK. By hand, and without any experience, the best you can hope for is to remove the casting flaws and smooth out steps and transitions. I've not seen any huge flaws in the heads I've had, and as has been proven, the DSM head can support big power as is. Beyond that it's sort of a black art with the flow bench and all that.

Most cast iron V8 heads are straight up junk, which is why easy gains are made by hand. F* it up and you're still better than stock. Port design has come a long way from the 1950's when most of the heads back then were designed.

which pictures are you referring to?

If you are good at porting by hand, and you have the right bits, flap wheels, etc... you can make it look like CNC, and you can do some things with shaping that are almost impossible to do with CNC alone. You can also end up putting 30 hrs into it, like I did this last time. lots of measuring

I'm having my seats cut for 1mm oversized valves right now... but as soon as it comes back, I'll take some good pictures to show what I'm talking about

the factory casting leaves a lot of volume in certain areas... areas that are time consuming to enlarge yourself, but there are still major flow restrictions in both intake and exhaust... mostly exhaust.

If I had access to CNC machinery, I would still do only 80% of the work by CNC (man I wish I had access).
Unless you're just using a 60 grit flapper wheel, I don't recommend that just anyone port the 4g63 head by hand....
