how to tell? a blown head gasket

I removed my head from the block today, when I first lifted the head up off the block I noticed that the entire gasket was wet looking, with oil. I don't think oil is supposed to get all over the gasket when it is sealed against the block/head, is it? let me know if this is the problem, prior to removing the head gasket my car started to really run crappy and the compression dropped to 104 on all cylinders.

That could happen when you lift the head and let the oil drip off of that. When it was running did it burn any oil/coolant? Also, did the oil/coolant mix?

I did'nt see any coolant in the oil when I drained it, and my car did'nt smoke before when the car was running bad, as far as the gasket goes, it did'nt look like oil dripped on it.
It looked more like, if you took your head gasket and sunk it into a bucket of oil, completely covered/smeared all over it. I also noticed prior to removal, I also had oil residue on the timing belt.
