How to know if timing is right? Timing light?

I just did my timing belt and i lined up the marks and all like the manual said. When the cams are lined up the crank is on the "0" mark. Is it suppose to be advanced at all? Like 5*BTDC or anything?

I have a timing light but what is it that you have to ground under the hood to check the timing?

Do you mean the mark on the crank pulley is at 0*? Thats where its supposed to be...put that part at the big 'T' and start it up. Once you put a light on it, and it should hover around 5*.

You are confusing engine timing with ignition timing.

You want all the timing marks on the engine to zero out.

When the car is running and a timing light applied, it should be at 5 degrees BTDC.

I don't want to hijack this thread, but people always say that if you have a DSM you must get your timing redone. Is it as simple as changing the timing belt and lining it up like RotaryRyan did?

alrght, i thought i had it right, just wanted to make sure.

When checking it with the light, isnt there something that you have to ground or something the the timing stay the same while you check it?
