how to instal a obx oil pressure gauge

i need help instaling obx oil pressure gauge i just bought it but dont know were to start been looking around but cant find a step by step on how to i already have a boost/vacume gauge already instaled on the car
 
Tap into one of the unused ports. The first link 91tsi posted shows it clearly.

What?

This is very easy to do. The two wires are optional; they are to light the gauge at night. Wire color doesn't matter just get +12V on one and -12V (ground) on the other with a switch in series to control the light.

The tubing taps from any of the ports on the oil filter housing, all hardware included. Good idea to use liquid thread sealant (Permatex) here.

Run the tubing up into the firewall and from there, wherever you mount the gauge. Tighten the fitting on the back of the gauge because if you don't oil will leak from there.

I recommend using wire loom over the length of tubing and running the tubing inside the wheel well (zip tie to the brake line metal tubing) and back into the bay via a drilled hole (good idea to use a form of grommet here). From there cut into the steering shaft boot.
 
thank you dont understand witch hole to tap in still im my car thers only two holes avalble one next to the oil pressure sensor right under it?

i found the hole but my obx gauge fitting was to small what size fits in the tap hole?
 
The bigger tap holes in the housing are 3/8BPST Smaller ones are 1/8BPST

BPST is not the same as NPT, but very close. They are both tapered pipe threads but one has one more thread per inch than the other. If you cram in an NPT fitting, get some Permatex liquid pipe sealant with it. Try not to use the tape, one piece of that comes loose and say bye bye to the turbo.

the tap holes next to the oil sensor is 3/8? the oil pressure gauge kit came with a small 1/8 and a big 1/4 and the 1/4 was way too small when right in?
 
It should come with adapters. When I had that setup I used a 3/8NPT male to 1/4NPT female reducer. Then threaded in a 1/4NPT male to 1/8NPT male. Then screwed the line on.

And yes,
Big holes= 3/8BPST
Small= 1/8BPST

Remember it goes
3/16, 1/4, 5/16, 3/8, 7/16 etc
 
is ther a hole that would fit the 1/8 1/4 fiting that i have or would i have to but a 3/8 male fitting
 
Only two different sizes in the housing. Either 3/8 or 1/8. You'll most likely need to buy the 3/8 to 1/4 reducer since I don't think you can find a 1/8 male to 1/8 male compression fitting locally.

I know it's quite the glob of tacky fittings huh :)

IF you dont want to mess with getting adapters to fit your sending unit, there are other places on the cylinder head that you can run a line out of to get the gauge to work. If you unhood the single wire down on the filter housing witht he black clip or a female spade connector thats your factory gauge. I would suggest in time going with something other than an obx gauge and sending usti as their sending units tend to leak and the mechanical gauges thay have tent to get a leak in the diaphram of the gauge and cause a faulty reading. I have heard horror storys of people using those and it not accuratly giving them the correct reading and causing damage to their engine. Good luck!

Technically possible but you'd have to account for pressure loss, since that's the last place to get oil.

And where would he tap? Those are all 1/8bpst taps and one 10mm x 1.25mm tap.

Agreed, I finally got tired of the problems and went AEM with an electric sender. Accurate readings are a must when I'm setting oil pressure feed to the turbo with the correct sized restrictor.
 
whatever you do... please dont EVER, NEVER. Neva' eva', neva' eva', fo' eva', ever shove a 1/8NPT into a 1/8BPST. NEVER. Unless you plan to weld it in.

You will permanently destroy those threads. Do it right. Buy a real oil pressure gauge (especially not mechanical). Any decent manufacturer sells the proper adapter.

Or buy the adapter seperately.

Here's a silver platter for you:

Adapter name:
-- "1/8 NPT female to 1/8 BPST male" The "T" on the end stands for tapered... so make sure it is tapered. (I may have confused BPST with BSPT but you will know once you find it correctly)

-- or option #2, remove the OFH, and tap it to an american pipe thread... (1/8npt wont work there)

I'll keep this simple.

1/8 BSPT is .383" major diameter and 28TPI
1/8 NPT is .405" major diameter and 27TPI
The diameter difference (4pieces of paper) is irrelevant when it's so close, CONSIDERING it's a high tapered thread. NPT will just get tighter a little sooner.

And one less thread per inch will not destroy the threads. It might slightly roll them but surely won't strip. Look around the net, plently of fourms have been in this predicament, most just cram NPT. And I have yet to see a gauge kit come with anything BSPT. My latest AEM gauge didn't.

BUT if the PO of this car didn't already run NPT, I would have gone the right way and bought an adapter. I'm not cheap, but I'm not oblivious either.

Do it right and remote mount the oil pressure sending unit. Do not run a mechanical gauge inside the car. When it explodes in your car on a cold morning while cruising down the highway you will understand why.

The reason it should be remote mounted is as stated 9/10 you have to run adapters to make it work with a DSM OFH. Well these motors tend to vibrate a lot especially if you have no balance shafts. Running adapters on the OFH is asking for trouble. It will eventually break.

if you want to keep both you can T-off where the stock sending unit is whit something like this..

Interesting about the remote mounting.

Another point brought up by the member steve was to prevent electric sender failer by remote mounting. Not 100% why it kept failure rate down but my guess would be the pressure spikes and by using the line, it acts as a buffer.

The reason the failure rate is less remote mounted is due to the sensor is now no longer receiving vibrations from the engine so it will last a lot longer. Same thing with adapters on the OFH. They will eventually break.

Remote mount the sensor and be done with it.

I don't wish to start a battle, and if it has been done before... then great. I just couldn't personally bring myself to do it. autometer and prosport both sell adapters either separately or included with their gauges. I'm not so worried about major diameter or taper rate as I would be about 1/27 vs 1/28. Considering about 4 threads of engagement, there will be a maximum of 1/7 thread overlap. you are right about cross threading.

Since this isn't a precision application, I guess its ok for some people. Just don't make it a habit :thumb:
 
Right on, like I said I would have also done it correctly if mine didn't already have NPT and sealed up.

I just realize it's a possibility for the people that don't do things...so correctly. :)
