How to check a TPS sensor

I'm asking for a friend, his car (91 Eclipse 1.8 n/t AT) is hard to start and shifts really rough. He just changed the whole distributor (costed him $800), but the problem is still there. Now the check engine light is on, and he said the code is for a TPS sensor. Is there a way to check the TPS sensor? Thanks.

Read over this thread. There's a bit of info on TPS adjustment and testing in there. If that doesn't help let me know.
