I've never had to do it on an exhaust stud before, but I've always used a method called double nut. You take two of the old nuts and put them back to back on the stud. Then you tighten them together. Now you can use the nut closest to the head like its a regular bolt head. It should turn out rather easy on an aluminum head. :thumb:

You can buy a stud removal but I don't see how you can't fit two nuts on the stud.

If you arent going to use them over again and worse comes to worse, then just get a vice grip and twist it out.

I got new ones, i doubt vice grips will take it out but i try that anyway. What about when installing the new ones what kind of silicon or glue needs to be use in the threds going inside the block.

Why won't two nuts fit, Unless you are trying to do it with the exhaust manifold still on. I've done it...

i just replaced all the studs in one of our 1g's. i bought stainless steel ones, they are awsome. i used some big vice gripa and the stock studs turned right out, the other 2 broken ones are a whole different ball game.

Hey guys

i am just curious i took my exhuast manifold off and broke off 3 of the studs, is there any way for me to get those studs out or am i going to have to take it to a shop to get them drilled and tapped again

thanks
:laser:

You would typically use an extractor set to get those out. You would drill the studs with a smaller drill bit then use the extractor, which looks somewhat like a drill bit w/ a reverse thread, to go in to the hole in a counter clockwise direction thus gripping the stud and turning them loose.

Just finished taking mine out. Used a small pipe wrench to break them loose and then did the double nut technique to finish. As they break loose you can just put a ratchet on the top nut and spin it out. As for my 2 broken studs, gonna try the ol' E-Z Out. :thumb:
BTW, spray a little PB on them to start out.

EASY with the easy out, I have a broken stud with a broken easy out tip in the center of it that I swear I must remove this time around. :)

If they are broken in the head I would definitely use a hela-coil kit. Do yourself a favor and go with 10mm if you have broken 8mm studs you are taking out. I hope the guy that invented the hela-coil kit is chilin on a beach 24/7, it is beautiful :thumb:

Also you can use Time-Sert kits for broken studs. Had this happen to me recently while torquing down the last nut . Anyway, it's easy to do, I had no problem with using an 8mm kit.

I got a broken exhaust stud in my head with the tip of an extractor bit in there too. IM taking it to a machine shop to have it removed before i get pissed and break something in the process  .

haha I'm not the only dumbass. :tease:

I was told to use a small carbide dremel bit, let's see what happens this time.

I try to put one of the new studs on the hole of the missing one and it didnt screw in?
I think part of the old one still inside where can i get one of those hela kits or the other thing at?

Also does turbo 1g and 2g used the same exhaust studs??

1g = 8mm 2g = 10mm

You can drill and re-tap for 10mm.

edit I just realize you have a 2g, sorry.

if you aernt able to get to it with a vice grips.... and its in the head

bust out the welder... weld a washer to it then weld a nut onto the washer... then loosen the nut if the weld dont hold keep rewelding it.. the heat from the welder will also help it break loose.
