2G How much should I pay

I know every shop prices differently, but I wanna make sure I don't overpay. I need a machine shop to remove and install my new valves, valve stem seals, valve guides, and install my kiggley springs and retainers which requires shimming. I also want them to resurface my head and block so they can install my cosmetic hg and arp head studs. What is a reasonable price I'm looking at?

Shop quotes vary by region also, In heavily populated areas there's more competition so you'd THINK it would be cheaper but that is not always the case, plus you have to take into consideration a shops reputation for customer service in case there's a problem.. I would shop around, don't be afraid to call and ask questions and pick one that you feel comfortable with. I had to go through the same thing when I was getting the engine in my camaro rebuilt, I got 5 different quotes and spent some time talking some of the owners and made my decision from there.

Use the internet resources, research shops in your area, and just outside your area. Find one that is reputable and that you can trust, then go talk to them in person and decide if you feel comfortable with them. Despite what even some new DSMers think, these are cars, and they require quality care and work. Just because they have a reputation for cheap parts, and go fast for less, doesn't mean that's the right answer. On the same token, you don't want to be paying 3000 for a head job. The companies I've seen, such as Buschur and JNZ (there are plenty more out there) charge anywhere from 650 to 1900 for a head rebuild. When it comes to cars, research is your best friend, ounce of prevention type of deal.

What are you going to do, take your replies from this forum and tell a shop that's all your going to pay. Haha.
Get a quote from the shop. Either you can afford it or not.

He is just trying to get an idea of what he will be looking at. No need to be an ass.

And I can't tell you how much it'll be for all that work but when I had my head rebuilt here in normal il I paid 280.

In San Diego prices varied from $250 - $600 depending on which machine shop I called and the more expensive didn't do any better work, they were just in a different part of town. Honestly, your best bet is asking the local DSMer's in your region (use our regional forum) and ask who they're taking parts to and what they are paying for the work.

I would only use a shop that has done a dsm before very important i would say.

I'll try that. I'm thinking about taking my motor to melenium motorsports in Santa Fe. I heard nothing but good things from them. I'm gonna call different shops before I do though.

If they don't have a DSM in the shop I wouldn't even waste my time discussing prices.
