How much fluid will i need

Well my old tranny was shot and one from a junkyard is going in tomorrow. Im just wondering how much fluid i will need for it all, im going to just put fluid in it then drive it to where my buddy works in a few days and have him flush it, but how much fluid do you think it will take total? Ive heard anywhere between 12-16qt's but im not sure. The converter on the new trans was full but we have it draining out now and im not sure how much is in the new tranny if there is even any at all but it will be drained also.

Why do you need to drain the converter? Because you will never get all the fluid out of it. Some converters have a drain plug but most do not. Even with the drain plug there will still be fluid in it. I don't know how much fluid it takes. My manual is in the garage.
