How loud is an external dump?

i was laughing so hard mySGT came in and yelled at me

yes it is loud ass hell. I was running an open dp for a while and it sounded like a gun when it would hit the revlimiter. And when it would full bosst you could just hear it get so much louder. I liked it though.

I just added a tial 40mm ext. wst gate on my car along w/ a bigger turbo and the sound is awesome, mine only comes on when I reach 15 pounds. I have mine routed through a dump tube out my front bumber on the passenger side. It's scary loud imo. If you think you'll have issues w/ the sound you can always route back into the downpipe. Good Luck!!

Has anyone every tried finding and putting a muffler on the Dump tube from like a Moped, boat engine, or smaller two cycle engines?

If I could find a short/slim muffler and modify it for like a 1 1/4" > 1 1/2" inlet and whatever outlet you want, do you think people would buy them??

I have access to a tig and mig welder so I could even fabricate polished stainless steel tips possibly!

kit would include for instance if you had a t3/t4 manifold and a wastegate.
>t304 stainless (brushed or polished) piping all the way down to the muffler
>muffler jetcoated, or hotcoat painted
>stainless steel tip<dependin on what I can find for the application

I was thinkig of one that raps down around the Drivers side wheel well and either comes out a hole inthe side of bumper or peeks out of the wheel well depending on clearance.

I haven't checked any pricing but what do you guy think they would be worth to you?

I might be building one for my car off of a IHI BB killer 16G turbo in the next month or so, that is if I don't sell my car before then.

^ I think you should give it a shot on your car and give us the results. Of course we will need video footage for the sound. Keep us informed.

Loud under boost!!!You probly won't hear your Blow off valve..................or your stereo....J/K:p

Its loud, but it will help you control your boost better:thumb:

My idea for the muffler off of the dump tube is simply for those people that live in states where the cops love to pull over vehicles that they think are running without cats or mufflers.

Obviously if I have a frickin exhaust tip commin out my drivers side front fender the cops may think that is a little wack and might pull me over for that. But atleast I'll be able to say if has a muffler on it :D . They'd prolly just laugh and say go buy a v8.

Hey, maybe it could make a external dump turbo system carb legal:thumb: Not that I'd every want to have my car as the test dummy for such a thing though.

I would just like to take advantage of the flow and the boost control, and not set off car alarms two blocks away and be a beaken for cops to harrass. With my 3" exhaust I already set enough off.

LOL! :D

Id like to see and hear what a muffler on the dump would be like.

I'm moving houses in the next two weeks.
After that hopefully I'll be swapping in the fresh 6 bolt I got chillin in my garage right now.

So I wont be able to work on the fabrication of this project for prolly a month.

But if anyone else wants to run with the idea, go for it!
Finding the right kind of muffler will be the hard part if there isn't a good gravyard for small engines around. HA, a mini glasspack would work.

I'm sure this page will be forgotten by then, but I'll be sure to make a post when the progress starts.

AWDBurn over and out

I forgot to ad

If any of you need a Tial Wastgate setup or garret manifold, check out my buddies site

www.xtecheng.com

he beats a lot of companies out for price on Tial products. I helped design and did a lot of the fabrication for the first 26 Gen III Eclipse GT turbo kits produced.

you might have to email him for info

I have a Tial 35mm gate on a Turbonetics manfiold and 50trim. I have the discharge from my wastegate droped back into my downpipe. I have 3" right from the turbo back. I get no boost creep at all, howver I dumped the pipe back in at a very long angle so it was very smooth exit with the exahust into the pipe. It's very quiet and I can make my turbo hold anywhere from 10 - 22psi with no problems, no creap, no spike no nothing.

Dump will help you if you have a stock or small turbo with an internal wastgate and you mount it on your O2 housing, but if you have an external gate it will all but eliminate creap totally.

I also found that an electronic boost controller with a push pull setup on the wastegate goes a long way to helping control boost. Manual boost controllers work, but are very inferior in my opinion. I have fixed boost creap problems simply by switching out crappy bleeder style manual boost controller for an electronic of some type. (EVC, Profec A-B, AVCR) etc etc... They have 10 times the control over the gate vs. a manual.

is there a difference between the dump tube and the external wastegate? Im sooo confused on this subject so please enlighten me. also, if i got an external WG setup on a new FPGreen, and got a o2 eliminator downpipe, would this screw up my chances of getting a external dump? is a o2 eliminator not a good choice for bigger turbos???

thanks

Dump tube as we DSMers call it is a different O2 housing that splits the exhaust portion from the turbo and the wastegate up. The exhaust coming directly out the back of the turbo goes into the regular exhaust system and the dump is only from the wastegate which just goes out a short pipe and is open under the car to the atmosphere. This is used only on a car with an internal wastegate for somebody who needs better control over boost creep or wants more HP or both.

An external wastegate is just using a wastegate mounted on the manifold with affords better control vs. an internal wastgate and are generally much lager in size. You can put the discharge from an external wastegate into the atmosphere like a dump or back into the exhaust system to keep the noise down. The dump as described above is generally to help guys with boost creep. An external wastegate helps eliminate that so well that you can put it back into the exhaust system generally with no ill effects like boost creep.

You can also mount an external wastegate on your O2 housing like some companies make for guys with stock manifold and a 20G or similar turbo. This just puts the wastegate on the O2 housing then dumps from there. Generally this method is not used anymore because we have much better turbo's and manifolds available today so you can run the wastegate directly from the manifold VS. a special O2 housing.

So to directly answer your question, if you got a Green and an O2 eliminator downpipe then you would either need an internally gated green which would no dump or you would need an exnternal wastegate which you could route however you wanted, to the atmosphere or back into the exhaust. I have a 50Trim (like green) O2 eliminator DP (my own design, made it myself) and an external wastegate with it plumbed back into the exhaust system to keep it quiet.

yeah i had my tial 35mm dumped and it is just way too loud, i mean its definately louder then open downpipe, and sounds alot different, if you run open o2 housing its more like that, its very raspy and loud as hell, ive run open downpipe before and that sounds less raspy

that dregrowl clip posted earlier is what an external dump sounds like with a muffler on the dump, so its quieter and smoother sounding, i like that and am planning on doing that, the o2dump clip is what an open external dump with no muffler sounds like......and it is ungodly loud

That movie clip above was exactly what we needed. I personally think that sounds bad ass. I can see how it would get annoying after driving it daily though.

oh that clip is exactly what it sounds like.........but its like watching top fuel dragsters and jet cars on tv........in person they are WAAY louder, the external dump is very very loud

You should try it with a ghetto "Exhaust Repair Kit" flex tubing.... ;)

Theres a 300gt that has external dump and you can hear him coming from a long ways away.

Does anyone know exactly what kind of exhaust the car in the first video has? That is my ideal exhuast.

My external dump is a love hate relationship. There is something to be said for a car which is quiet yet simply hauls a$$ but there is something about being noticed. With an external, you will be noticed. Infact, everyone will notice you including cops. I have been pulled over 2 times for dumping, and actually had a cop find me from over a half mile away in the middle of the night when I was doing test pulls. I am going back and forth if I want to re route back in and hear that sweet sound of the turbo spooling. On a t28, personally I wouldn't do it. It takes a bit of the quiet driveability away from your car. If you go with a bigger turbo, it might be something to consider.
