I have two 1ga's and am trying to swap their stereos. One of them has the stock amplifier that sits underneath the two single DIN radio and CD player. The amp is mounted on a metal bracket that appears to be attached to the inside of the console using two bolts on each side. I can only see the nuts so I am assuming there are bolts on the other side. I have tried to loosen them but they feel like they are nearly welded on there.

My question is, in order to remove and then install the stock amp, do I need to take off the carpeted side panels on either side of the center console? Just how much dash disassembly is necessary? I was hoping I'd be able to do everything from within the hole where the stereo used to be but that is seeming increasingly unlikely. Thanks!

I'm honestly not sure as I have never owned one with the stock amp still in place, but if you just need to take off the two side covers there should only be two screws on either side behind the pop out plastic pieces. Should be pretty easy and straightforward to remove them...

This guide is for getting the ECU out but should still help you at least to see what you are dealing with.

Complete How-To

Hope this helps!

My Laser has this stock amp as well.

Take off the carpeted side panels and the attachment bolts are right there on each side, but remove the radio first so that double DIN opening is free to pull the amp through. Be helpful to disconnect the negative connection from the battery so you don't have to be concerned on blowing thing, or creating a short.

Radio has two grounds going to it: One is in the large plug itself - a system ground - and the other is the chassis ground in which when you mount the radio to the frame, the chassis of the radio is the other ground. If you don't attach the radio to the mounting frame, radio will not work.

..and this is how you also remove the ECU, when necessary. But when you do that, you first disconnect the negative connection from the battery.
