Not to be intentionally stupid here, but would a belt sander be feasible to obtain the 'brushed' look, if you masked the edges to avoid chipping, and swapped the belts out for higher-grit now and again? That's what I usually use at work if something calls for a block, but will take hours by hand.
Obviously, final grit and polishing would be done by hand with the block for a mirror finish, but I tend to have an aversion to spending extra time on something that can be finished in a quarter the time, with the same quality results.
