I want to just polish the raised letters on the valve cover, but I don't want to take it off.

I planned on just using sand paper. Starting with a low grit and working my way up. I have a small electric sander that I planned on using. Anyone ever done this? Would this be the correct approach or should I try something else to accomplish this.

Thanks.

I polished mine. You want to start with 320 or so grit paper, and work your way up. You should end with about 800 or so. Finish up with some nevr-dull or mothers polish, and it should look good.

die grinder works nice, i did that on mine, i just dont have photos, but im goin to polish that so its smooth and paint the valve cover red:thumb:

My method's a nice, flat piece of 2X2 or so, and use it for a sanding block. Duct tape the areas around so you don't leave a scuff where you didn't mean to. Also, sanding screen works better than paper. Finish with a bit of T-shirt on the block along with your choice of metal polish (Simichrome, Flitz, Mother's, Meguiar's, DuPont, etc.).

If you do go the power route, be careful as it's easy to "dish" areas with a disk. It takes _very_little_ power to polish the letters.

I found it usefull to use a Roto-Zip and a small flapper sanding disk to get the letters smooth. Then I attached the polishing tip and buffed the letter tops. The whole process took about 30 minutes.
